    it will take a few years, but NASCAR will look back on some of their actions of 2014 and really, really regret them...stifling the media, not publishing attendance numbers, crazy social media policies, they're turning from Big Bill's "benevolent dictator" into, well...just plain ol' dictators.

    it's a shame because the racing has been pretty good this year, I really like the Gen6 car (reminds me of the cars from the early to mid 90's). but 20+ years of chasing ratings, growth, and casual fans might have been too much.

    I thought about driving down to Daytona this morning but didn't, because of the high chance of rain. I'm glad I didn't.

    she had a fast car...a rocket ship. nascar will get her a win at a super speedway. it is in the cards (business/turnaround model).

    I think the bloom is off the rose with Danica....they've gotten all the PR boost they'll get from her.

    engineering a win for her at this point is going to be too transparent.

    speaking of desperate...entire back stretch was empty (as in, no tix sold, not fans not showing up due to delay/rain). that would have been unthinkable 5 years ago.

    renovate north Wilkesboro...give her stadium style seating and she will sell out!!!

    of course, making ticket prices a bit more targeted at the core will help too.

    Went yesterday and spent most of my time in the mall hiding from the rain. It was a long day and we stayed until they called it. I had to decide whether it would be worth going back today. Its only a thirty minute drive for me but I didn't want to battle the rain again. It looked like they would get at least half way before the rain set in so I figured I'd give it another try as I'd rather be out doing something than sitting in a chair in front of the TV all day.

    They got the race going and I was surprised how quickly the " big one " happened. Watching the #10 thread the needle was pretty amazing and I think today luck was on her side. I sure wish they could've gone the distance because it would have been crazy at the finish. They went from single file to two and three wide in just a few laps so it was possible for a driver to make some moves to get to the front.

    It was fun to watch even though the sun was brutal before the rain came and I'm glad I went.

    is he retiring from F1 after 2015, or racing entirely?

    I think he could be a big star in the US if he wanted to make a proper attempt at it. his "leave me alone I know what I'm doing" caught on big in the US, he makes a great anti-hero.

    the only growth in NASCAR right now is that monster TV contract NASCAR just signed, and everyone is angling for a bigger slice.

    The TV contract that a couple of their networks are crying about already.

    Then, there are the existing contracts that the networks are trying to wiggle out of.

    Those guy in the fake wood panel walled offices in Daytoner aren't stupid. They saw
    what happened when USAC ruled Indy Cars and the owners took over the show and
    called it CART.

    yep.

    IIRC about 10 years ago the NASCAR team owners started clamoring for franchises and NASCAR shut them down pretty quickly (something like "we can find new independent contractors). this will be more of the same.

    (CART went public largely as a way for its team owners to cash out their franchise values, to the detriment of both the sport and any shareholders)

    Louden was a fantastic race this year. The lower speeds of the flatter banking made it more mechanical in grip. A lot more motion to the cars, more fun to watch.

    Shame about the Penske 22, but joey was also cutting it close given how bad Morgan had been wandering around in his driving.

    there really seems to be a good bit of discussion going on about the state of nascar. the teams are concerned about the long term play from here. sponsors are getting increasingly more difficult to sign. the small teams are quickly becoming irrelevant and the delta between the superteams and the smalls has grown to insurmountable scale. the chase format is a joke and getting worse by the year. the seats are empty...only the tv contracts are keeping things in the black.

    the new union will (if allowed to survive) will effectively be 9 more hands in the cash.

    rough times ahead for sure!!!!!

    nascar at a crossroads...interesting read. it will also bring back memories of great teams that have gone off into the sunset. nascar needs to turn back the clock in order to save itself.

    could we be in store for a split? if I were bruton smith, I might be thinking in those terms!!!
