What is the most collectible Ferrari challenge car?

All challenge cars (348-458) have a vin...360c was the first year of fully factory built with no "kit".

 

I believe the 97 and up F355's also were factory built. They have a Challenge model name.

 

as far as 355 ch factory built or not, i got this info about the UK RHD cars from MHT or actually the H in MHT. They took all the UK challenge cars and preped them for ferrari.

The cars came in batches afew cars for each race season. Each batch was progressively more built up. So the first season were really came as road cars, however the carpets had been removed and roll cage mounts welded in at the factory.

By the time it came to the last batch they came as factory race cars, all that was needed was to bolt on the rear wing and seats etc.


Not sure if teh LHD euro spec and us spec cars were the same ? does anyone remember.

But I guess there is a group of cars whos intention at the factory was that they would be challenge cars and thus had roll cage mounts added all the way up to full build. Then there were cars converted outside of the factory with the kit.


Can anyone shed light on this?

 

Technically, any converted road car should have a title, so that would only apply to the factory challenge cars. However, it would be tough to get a '96 up to pass inspection in many states due to the lack of functioning obd2 on converted cars.

 

Not that I know of, but if anyone's going to write one, I've got a done of results from the US '96 thru '01 seasons.....

Yes please. I know my car was run by Milka Duno and she recorded the first win by a woman in the series (Road Atlanta) but I'd love to piece together the rest of the history.

 

A few years ago (2008 iirc) a german ferrari service dealer had a "new" 348 challenge for sale, raced only once. 50.000€
348C are the rarest.

 

I'd say the 355CH will be the more collectable. They're not as rare as the 348 but are better looking, sound better, bit faster and still come with a manual gearbox, whilst still able to register for the street in most places.

Rob, I was engaged by FNA and FCA as a lawyer to write the waiver and release forms for the first Ferrari Challenge races; they couldn't pay legal fees at the time so they compensated me by paying my air fare, hotel and meals for the first Challenge Race weekend at Road Atlanta and for the second at Willow Springs. And of course they were 348s. I still have the wine glasses they gave as souvenirs for those races, with outlines of a 348 Challenge car on the glasses in red!

 

That just highlights the financial situation Ferrari was in at that time in their history. People can complain all they want about how Luca runs things and the cars he's put out but that man saved Ferrari.

to be fair Porsche, AM, Lambo and a few others were "on the brink" in the early/mid 90's as well. they all got a new corporate parent, a swift kick in the ass, or both at the same time.

 

It did, Rob. It was the only F355 Challenge raced in the North American Ferrari Challenge Series that year.
