    Hey Guys,
I'm in the middle of doing a valve job on my '82 2v.The fences on 2 of my plastic cam gears broke off in my hand.Better now than later. Been reading threads and looks like there's 3 types-original plastic, steel and alum.Question is what have you guys upgraded to? How much and where did you source them?Ferrparts had the best price, but is sold out of the original plastic.....
Does anyone have a set they'd like to sell,or should I go with steel or alum? The threads I read never had a resolution.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Carter

I have a set of plastics I'll cheerfully sell you - replaced mine with aluminum from Superformance a while back.

Went with one-piece aluminum, annodized red, but the OEMs stay with the car. Sorry.

You can also go with Scott's adjustable cam gears using the newer rounded toothed belts.

I did my timing belts a few months ago. The gears are not plastic. I put a magnet to them and it definitely stuck. U.S. 83QV. Must be a coating.

Plastic ones are on the early cars, yours are fine, and metal.

Could be a retrofit, but at some point the part was changed, Ricambi would know....

They appear plastic. Maybe a coating. But again, the magnet did stick. I was surprised when it did.

Steel or aluminum. Why would you replace a broken part with another that you know will eventually break, too?

The plastic ones on my former car broke also, and I replced them w/ steel ones from a QV (sourced through a place in AZ - GT Car Parts or something like that??) - 5 adjusment holes instead of just 3. Of course, as other have already mentioned, you can also get fully adjustable gears. It's a cost/benefit thing for you to decide.

    Good luck.

    Scott,

What is the torque you recommend for the 5 hex screws holding the pullies secure?

My OEMs off my '81 look quite a bit different than that.

Yours appear to show rust. Mine do not in any way.

Building (or rather re-building) a house. It's in my 10314 thread posted two or three days ago.

But I'm back. Now it's time to finish another build! I like those cam gears.

    How are the synchros?
