I think its probably going to be faster than the other two cars around most tracks... it has to be magic of the black sort
"The 918 doesn’t just match the McLaren’s accelerative punch it feels half as exciting again, with a feral race car scream that animates neck hair like a field of wheat in a stiff breeze…the Porsche leaves with the laurels."
"The P1 is lighter, understeers less, has terrifying theatre and freakish levels of response. After the circuit driving part of the test the mag concluded: The McLaren is intuitive, forgiving and staggeringly entertaining. The track-day pick then, but with a rider: Dont think for a second it outmanoeuvres the Porsche." We'll have to wait for the article to get the full verdict but it seems the McLaren may be the better track car while the Porsche is the better all-rounder. I went to the bookstore today only to find last month's Evo so I left with Top Gear mag instead. A similar verdict was reached it seems: The 918 is more accessible, and quicker from the get-go, but a bit more seat time in the P1 (unattainable for most journos) would most likely result in quicker times. I'm keen to see some laptime comparisons of the three cars with racing drivers on various tracks and see the effects of the 918's awd and torque, p1's downforce, and LaF's lighter weight and high power, etc etc. All these cars are "winners" but the racing enthusiast in me wants to see if any one of the three is clearly the "faster" car. Laptimes on tracks with different layouts (tight and technical, long straights, etc) may indicate this. Exciting times for us petrolheads and it's great to share with everyone!
Just read the article , I'll post main bits later . Porsche gets it and reading between the lines it's pretty interesting . It's a little washy washy ( ,makes great pains not to upset anyone / manufacturers or suppliers ) but if you read between the lines it's pretty clear .
So the Porsche "feels half as exciting" as the McLaren, but in conclusion the reviewer consider it the better road car. I guess we will have to read the unexpurgated article,to see his line of reasoning.
I'm sorry you have misunderstood . The quote is " the Porsche doesn't just match the mclarens acceleration punch , it feels half as exciting again with a feral top end race car scream that animates the neck hairs " which means 50 per cent MORE exciting .
Ferrari refused to provide a la Ferrari and evo were told in no uncertain terms of the consequences of using a customer car . Make of that what you will.
I won't make anything at all out of that. Ferrari also refused to allow a track battle between the Speciale and the 650S but Autocar went ahead anyway and the Ferrari won...
It should be "the Porsche doesn't just match the McLaren's acceleration punch, it feels JUST as exciting again with a feral top end race car scream that animates the neck hairs..." for it to make sense.
Sorry I have written it out wrong I have just cut and paste from the digital edition . It reads In a straight line, the Porsche doesn’t just match the McLaren’s accelerative punch, it feels half as exciting again with a feral top-end race-car scream that animates neck-hair like a field of wheat in a stiff breeze and simply ferocious torque-gorged push from what seems like zero revs. When Henry gets to sample it, he’s as blown away as Harry and me, declaring the 918 ‘monstrously quick with gearshifts that are so fast you feel they might not even have happened’. I had the just in the wrong place that's why I was confusing you all . Apologies .
Then you will enjoy this " But the engine. Wow, the engine. The 4.6-litre V8 is so sharp at the top end but with the electrical boost it feels like a 10 litre in the mid-range. The throttle response is stunning and the instant, precise, scalpel-sharp power is of such quality. "
Funnily enough, Sutcliffe also spoke of a figurative 10-litre V12 when he review the LaFerrari. They must teach such cliches in schools of journalism!
Just read the 918/918 article on EVO. Very impressive. I want a 918...badly. What I find interesting is how several journalists seemed to consider the P1 "in a different league" and now these back-to-back tests seem to suggest otherwise. All great cars certainly...BUT, for my personal tastes, there is something very appealing about the 918. Well done to Porsche.
This can't be possible! The P1 was gonna break all records! And as if it wasn't enough these magic beans Ron Dennis sold me don't work!
Just read the EVO piece... 918 seems to be a step above P1 in most categories. Just as fast through high-speed corners as the P1 in Race mode. Seems the aero on the P1 was done by the same guys who penned this year's F1 car. And honestly I do not think that LaF will be able to eclipse the 918.
