It may be that TS went a little wide on purpose so that Ward was edged out of a position. Often, when you you anticipate the hit, you steer into it, too. Could just have been an innocent mid-turn adjustment.

It is certainly true that Ward put himself in harm's way. But, it's also true that TS hit someone under a caution (I think, but I may be wrong on that). Emergency crews hadn't yet arrived, but it looked like everyone had already backed out of their throttles by then, so I assume a caution flag was thrown.

I wasn't apportioning blame for the contact. That remains to be seen.
There is no doubt that the young man put himself in needless peril. There is no room in racing for such foolishness.

    Agreed

I grew up at upstate NY dirt tracks, back in the days of drinking and racing they did stunts like this all the time, they should have ended it when the made driver race sober.

The clay when damp/wet is extremely slippery, extreme caution should always be used

very sad for the sport and all involved, hopefully rules will change

Oh, agreed, but emotions clearly play a role in racing. Maybe they shouldn't, but drivers are still human. And, as stated, sanctioning bodies have not treated drivers harshly for similar conduct in the past. While it's not a tacit approval, their failure to take serious action against other drivers sets the precedent.

    Agreed.
Which is why this sort of irresponsible action must be labeled as such.

I know you're saying Ward was irresponsible, but are you saying the same about TS?

I'm saying that remains to be seen. Ward's responsibility is not a matter of opinion.

    Entirely avoidable.

One shame is that this is on every local and national newscast and is what much of America thinks racing is like.

You get out of the car.

You stand in the middle of the track full of cars running at crazy speeds, wearing all black on top of it

You should not be surprised if someone runs you over.

Sorry, that's the truth. If he could have controlled his emotions, he'd be alive today.

The only question I have is why all the cars were going so fast after the accident. Was there no yellow? Is so, then someone needs to figure out why everyone kept racing with a car smashed in the corner.

Nascar does have this weird thing about drivers acting out on the track. It's pretty unique to them. Maybe this will stop it.

I view this as typical liberal thinking. It spreads and soon we have no more racing. It has no reframing values and thus should be outlawed just like supersized soft drinks.

I find his explanation if Stewart's thinking highly improbable...I don't think a significant portion of the population thinks like this.

To my untrained eye, Ward immediately endangered himself by getting out of the car. Running head on into traffic is something I've never seen from a professional racer. I don't think TS anticipated the kid would be running at him and I'm more inclined to believe he was attempting to dodge him.

Just a senseless tragedy...RIP to Ward.

As he guns it, the back of the car steps out, away from Ward. So it does appear TS tried to steer the car with throttle, but it was too late.

It's my opinion that he tried to ''scare'' Ward and it went wrong. Also agree that the arrogant fatty will probably walk.

    Wait, what?

It IS insane and unheard of to get out of the car and walk onto the track. Whoever doesn't understand that should not be allowed near any type of racingcar, let alone drive one.

If this hadn't killed poor Kevin, he should have been handed a life long ban from any type of racing.
