So I brought in my 2011 car for a 3 year annual service. They did a lot of software updates and upon receiving the car, I have no more crackling and pops from my exhaust :(

I have fabspeed racing headers, test pipes and novitec racing exhaust. Before the crackles were crazy!! I would say 10 times louder than stock crackles in the 2010-11 cars.

I know this issue has been brought up a few times. I wonder what they did to the car that can completely change that out? I mean before my car had very loud crackles, sounded like machine gun going off. Now its very tame on the overrun. Of course if I step on the gas it still screams!

On the plus side I do have to say the car feels faster and smoother. The transmission is also shifting much faster and smoother as well.

Maybe we could petition Ferrari to bring back the crackles and burbles. I thought my 360 with Tubi sounded better than the 458 (more a scream) and the 355 sounded better yet, but when I got a 2010 458 I loved the backoff sound. I'd rather not lose that sound.

Same thing happened to my car,i chose 2010 model just for the crackles and they are gone now :(
But so many good things came with the software
    -better driveability
    -faster acceleration
    -better handling and comfort
-transmission in 1st gear is way more easy to engage

Bummer, I can attest to the drama of John's Italia's crackles and pops when he had them!
John: can't the dealer revert the ecu to pre-update settings?

This really sucks, I wish someone would make a workaround for this. I love the way the 2010's and early 2011's sound. It would be great if we could get the same sound in 2012+ cars. I would pay good money for it.

I have told the dealer not to install ECU updates. The way I put it was, "If you install updates and the crackles and burbles go away, you can keep the car." So far, so good.

I did the same thing on my 11. They left alone, and have all the nice crackles and over run:). No update for me.

Damn, I was very happy with the way the car was setup before. I am sad that I will never have those wonderful crackles again.

For those that still have it, don't update! If you don't care for it then update, your transmission will shift a lot faster and smoother.

Same thing happened to me. Software update lost all the crackle and pops. Took me 4 months of back and forth arguing with the factory back in Italy but they finally reverted the software to how it was!

Reason for the update was because of emissions. Second interesting thing to note is a change to the valves in the engines on 2012+ Models. They changed to ball bearings or some **** like that so they open and close immediately. There is no software on 12+ models to make them crackle and pops

This is what my dealer told me anyway.

Are you serious when you say 10times louder?! Do you have a cat at all? Do you blow flames?

Sounds soooo good! He is NOT joking when he said it sounds like a machine gun. It literally sounds like a fully automatic AK-47 in the cabin of the car.

That sounds amazing, nice combo of exhaust components:

"fabspeed racing headers, test pipes and novitec racing exhaust"

I would be pissed about no snap crackle pop on overrun and downshifts...but it sounds like you can have the software reset to the old in that regard...go for it!

I would have liked to hear/see that car around Orinda...but never did and I moved out last year after 17 years. Miss that town!

I can hear some on my late 2012 EU spec with sport exhaust and capristo valve control, definitely not like the 2011 I drove before.

Haven't seen you around lately. You've passed by my office on Ventura a few times and it's a pleasure to look out and hear each throttle blip up to a block away.

This topic came up before. I like the way my 2010 458 sounds and do not want it changed. So when the dealer changes oil I request no software changes. I am sure it helps or Ferrari would not make the changes I just want the sound.

I am still upset with Ferrari for dropping the manual transmission. This is why I have not bought a new Ferrari and most likely will not. I love my Ferrari dealer in Orlando Florida.

I took my car to the dealer because the CEL came on (2010 458). It was an O2 sensor issue and the software was updated. I agree that emissions are the reason.

The crackles and pops when lifting aggressively off the throttle are now gone. However, the car drives SO MUCH BETTER. It is smoother and less twitchy. Easier to drive. Like others have said, driving in 1st and 2nd gear is now possible and not jerky. Shifting is also less jerky. Besides the exhaust, I like the update; I'm glad it was done. For those who miss the old exhaust sound, the Ferrari sport exhaust or aftermarket ones are options.
