For long term enjoyment and fiscal appreciation ? I know... I know; buy what you love. I could love either.
This scenario has been going through my head since those cars came out. Both are great but if go 360cs in that rubino red. Saw one at foh and can't get it outta my mind. Good taste !
CS will be the better investment IMO. I'd call it a draw on fun to drive. btw I think you can buy 2 or 3 996 GT2s for the price of one CS right now...
360 CS. However potent the GT2.. its still a 996. Not sure how much it will appreciate when the 997's come down in price, which is admittedly have nicer interiors and are away from the spectre of IMS failure.
996 gt2 is 40% of the price of a CS. The CS is slower but probably much more visceral. It has cult status. The 996 gt2 doesnt. It's underratted IMO. A real bargain.
GT2 might be faster but I would go for the CS any day of the week. IMO a CS should be compared with a GT3 RS. It would be tougher then but I would go for the CS still. The noise is absolutely out of this world. I love everything about it. I still remember when I lived in the UK I was on a nice A road and this CS accelerated hard from a round about and blew passed me at considerable speed. I opened my windows in advance and he was going for it properly...red lining every gear. The noise will stick to me till my dying days. Always loved the CS before that (it was ~4 years old at the time) but I made a mental note that I NEED one in my life. I love the RS porsche's (particularly the 997) but for me there's no competition in the end. The CS made the hairs stand up everywhere. To have that noise in your life is worth a lot...
CS all the way. What other car could give so much joy and excitement just seeing it sit in your garage. The lines on the CS are gorgeous. Unless your on a track, the CS will be more fun. I like Porsches, however they still look haven't evolved much in the looks department from the lonely ole VW bug. Yeah, you can add a wing and it looks a little tougher. Not to mention you see Porsches in California here like you see Prius's. It's almost the same comparison to a Vette. Both are a mass produced vehicle. Where the production numbers on the 360 line in general was relatively low. And CS worldwide were around 1200.
I have owned a CS and it was a monster compared with the 355 I sold to get the CS. It was a quantum leap forward. Having said that, the GT2 is a better car all around. Faster, tighter, and cheaper to drive/maintain. But, if I had to own one again, I'd go with the CS, "because it has the elusive quality called soul and is quite simply a wonderful automobile that lives up to the mystique surrounding its name."
Have you driven a 996 GT2? I found it to be very exciting and very fast - and a real bargain. Yes, it can scare you but probably will not kill you if you are experienced with the 911 and can use your head. If you want to spend more money, the 993TT brought up to RUF CTR specs is even more so (except not so much a bargain). But then, neither of these are Ferraris.
I had a 6-GT3 which required your full attention, but I didn't think it was unmanageable. the high performance 911s have gotten a bad rap in some ways; the modern cars aren't the doctor killers their predecessors were. btw, Sloan Cars (I know, I know) has a seal gray 996 GT2 RUF for sale. giggity. 2002 Porsche 996 GT2 RUF enhanced Seal Gray/black | Sloancars to the OP, I'd still take a CS.
Depends on whether you want a three-pedal manual or flappy paddles. Long term, no one will be doing old school manuals in high end sports cars. But, overall, I agree -- the 996 was sort of a nadir for Porsche. A 360 would be a better buy. Although for financial appreciation I would look into a 993 and skip both the cars you mention.
I have a CS and a 997 GT2. The GT2 is actually my daily driver. It also serves occasional track day duty. Frankly, it's better at both of those functions. On the road it's dependable, docile and communicative. Dr Jeckyl... On the track, you wake up a brutal angry beast. You drive it like a high horsepower car, because it is. The power overwhelms the handling so you have to constantly balance the two and walk that fine line, which is fun but there is nothing subtle about it. Meet Mr Hyde... On the other hand, to me the CS represents perfect harmony. It's power and handling are perfectly balanced, neither overwhelms the other. It's amazingly delicate to the touch and immediately responsive to your every input. Plus it has great looks and a sound to die for. The CS is truly a unique pleasure to drive, either relaxed or hard. You feel like you're dancing with it as opposed to fighting with it. Solid multi-purpose DD / Track weapon - GT2 no doubt. Driving nirvana - CS all the way. Hope that helps. Matter of fact, come on up and try them both for yourself!
That about sums it up. Appreciation wise the CS has been going nowhere but up, which is a function of supply and demand. Judging by what I am hearing here, it will be interesting to see what the next 20 years holds for CS values.
I like the value of the 996 over the 997. IMO its fully depreciated. IMO the car is a sleeper flying low under the radar for now. About 1000 total worldwide production 2001 to 2005.
Yes I've driven a 996GT2. Scared the bejesus out of the salesperson. Just crazy stupid fun. Never driven a CS but I like the race-car-on-the-street concept. The one I had my eyeball on ebay dissapeared; No longer available. Because of its history; salvage title ( I saw the damage; not too bad) the price difference was not that bad between it and the GT2. I'd like a driver for a change not garage art as usual.
Think I know of that car. Not too many match the description. Years back helped a Rennlist member find that car. Thats about what he paid for it. Found a GT2 for a foreign buyer at the local Park Place too. Thats the one I drove. I love spending others money Now its my turn I stalked Seinfelds Blue GT2 for about a year but it was out of my reach. THAT would be the car if the price was right !
