Sorry if this has been discussed before, a quick search didn't bring anything up in this section. I have always called the 355 the 3-55, but I was able to go on a factory tour a short time back with my uncle and they fellow at the factory kept referring to it as a 3-5-5. When I questioned it to my uncle, the gentleman behind me said that is what Clarkson always referred to his as too. So, have I been saying it wrong all along, and it officially is 3-5-5?

I'd be tempted to go with what the factory says! :)

Since the model name comes from the fact its a "35" (3.5) litre, "5" valves per cylinder engine if your going to split the digits up differently from "3-5-5" it would make more sense to say "35-5" which sounds naff and no-one will know what your talking about LOL

Interesting thread. I almost always say 3-55. I've started to say 3-5-5 lately. Jeremy Clarkson influence ;)

I say three-five-five, but I don't think its a big deal if people say three-fifty-five either.

All Ferraris have been named after displacement. These are mostly single digit numbersin some order for later model cars. To me it makes sense to call the V8s by their digits, hence 3 0 8, or 3 2 8, 3 4 8, 3 5 5, 3 6 0, 4 3 0, 4 5 8. But thats for purists and the marketing people at the factory do not care about that. A car is called by what sounds more salable to them. In the past even the factory has contradicted itself. It has also not been consistent in its naming schemes. To refer to the model commonly as either a 3 55 or 3 5 5 seems appropriate. The 3 60 is just that as is a 4 30, but the 4 5 8 seems what the factory prefers even though they have also called it a 4 58. Marketing.

Hmm, I've been saying 3-55 and 3-48, but always said 3-0-8 before. In Italian it's Trecento Quarantotto which is Three hundred and forty-eight. ;)

Did some more research, it seems pretty split on three five five and three fifty five. Nobody says thirty five five or three hundred fifty five...

But the factory seems to says three five five as does Clarkson, so...

This is a funny discussion. The only car I think of saying the numbers individually is the "3 oh 8". Bypassing the correct nomenclature of saying Zero instead. But for me it's the first number, 3 or 4, then the last two as a total, 28, 48, 55, 60 and 58 and so on and so forth.

Also, for the most part Ferrari's are named after their displacement - Generally their V8 non GT line of cars.

And now what are they going to do with naming the new Turbo cars?

It's for sure a power war now and if it weren't for McLaren it wouldn't be here. There has to be a point where someone says enough, but I don't think you will be hearing that from Tim Allen! You ever wonder how much power they could get out of a properly engineered, to do so, Nitro-Methane W-16 Turbo like in the Veyron? I know, I'm just babbling now, moving along...

Yes, just curious. Didn't think it was a big deal. But being that I will be in the market soon I would like to know the "proper" way to say 355...

If it ends in a zero, it is acceptable to say it with the last two digits together (ie. 3-60, 4-30, 5-50)

All others should be said individually (ie. 3-4-8, 3-5-5, 4-5-8 etc)
