1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopo | Gooding & Company
I looked round the RM Countach with Valentino last night and it was effectively a barn find car. The engine had no visible water in it, there was visible corrosion showing on the rads and various water pipes, the air pump was non standard, the clutch was seized and pedal wouldn't push down. There was no evidence anyone had touched the engine for years. Other odd areas were the interior looked like it had been re trimmed at some point, as the seats had lost their perforations and all the US regulation equipment had been added after it had left the factory. On the plus side, it looked fantastic in that amazing colour and I can't wait to see it again, once its drivetrain has been fully restored..
Serious question - why do you bother putting it to a specialist, if its not going to be driven? Then again, I've never understood the low miles thing. Art has no purpose other than as art. A car is made for driving. I don't get why you pay more for a car which is cosmetically perfect, but mechanically unusable, when the cosmetic bit is much easier to fix? It would be like my girlfriend putting on her best underwear, and me asking her to sit in the corner of the bedroom!
The engines in these cars are not magical they are just a motor, they can be easily rebuilt and maintained if you have mechanical skills, I know this as I have done it and plan on doing it again this winter. I think the engine was left as it is to add to the charm of being a barn find. I am so happy I put all those miles on mine after 24 years of ownership, now I'm afraid to drive it most certainly after last nights results.
Harry, LP400S do not have seat perforations FWIW. They were introduced in the 5-liter cars with the LP500S.
Watched that online. Tangibly different level of excitement in the room and in the bidding, compared to previous lots. (The Dino GTS before went to first bid)

There is a live feed you have to enter your name and email to get in. Then is shows photos of the car and the bid. It does not show the room live like the other ones. Cheers Jim
