    Hey fellows,

I am wanting to purchase an FF but was wondering how it would handle the snow for us in the North East. Anyone drive theirs in the winter?

I understand maybe not on the day of a lot of snow but the day after, does it handle the ice and a few inches on the ground well?

    Appreciate any input, thanks!

We have used our FF in the winter for the past 2 seasons. You'll want winter tires (Sottozeroes specific to the FF are good). Snow traction is ok, but the summer spec tires compound is useless below 40 degrees.

Realistically, the car is phenomenal in the wet and works well in the snow. We have SUV's for the heavy stuff (and for when it's just ugly slush). The car itself is low, so while you can, you probably don't want to be pounding through snowdrifts

We do drive our cars in the rain, but candidly we're not committed enough to drive a $$ in the crap winter weather though it's doable (search for Rick Lederman's snow posts here). Another realistic question is the quality of the roads - no Ferrari wheel is going to tolerate potholes for too long.

Awesome car for 9 months of the year, and any wet day. Heavy snow, it stays home.

Definitely figured it would need a good set of snows, thanks for the input on the Sotto's!

I have an Escalade for the really heavy snow but wondered if I could get away with driving the car 90% of the year, the 10% being when there is a lot of snow on the ground. Otherwise I would get the F12 and leave the Escalade for the winter. But than the F12 gets driven for 6-7 months as appose to the FF basically year round, which is a huge bonus.

the FF with snows is better than my LR4 with nokian WRs, my Range rover with Pirelli snows and my escalade with 18 inch nokian snows...

I live 30 miles north of nyc...even with a lot of snow on the ground the FF goes right through it....don't hesitate to drive it every day....

F-430, contact ttforcefed NOW and buy the extra set of wheels! I bought my FF 2 years ago and it now has 40,000 miles. I drive it all winter! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7prO-hg3zw shot January 1st this year on the way to the model airplane flying field. Fresh 5 inches of snow and 60 mph in the FF.

You will need SottoZero's. Potholes are the FF's right front nemesis. I've destroyed 4 right front tires and three right front wheels although I just found a place in Detroit that appears will fix all three wheels. I am dropping them off this week for repair.

I bought the first extra set of wheels from the dealer when I bought the FF. At $3K for a front wheel they are pricey. I found a slightly used set from a reseller here on FChat (YEAHHHH FChat!) for less than the price of one new wheel. Two weeks ago in Indiana I hit a pothole on I-469 south of FT Wayne that bent another wheel, third this year. So the third set of extra wheels now comes into play.

The FF is simply amazing in snow. Pull out in snow and stop. Punch the gas to the floor, the FF will shake, the brakes will grab all four wheels to stop that instantaneous wheel spin, then the horsepower is backed down to 10 or 20 (whatever) and the FF will creep away slowly accelerating until you hit a dry patch then hang on as the FF's computers will realize a dry spot and the HP comes up and all the torque gets applied to that wheel ... all INSTANTLY. It is way cool :D.

I've never damaged a rear wheel or tire. Only the front right. The rest of the winter experience with the FF is simply wonderful. People will look at you like you are nuts but who cares :). I probably have a bunch of other FF photos here in the FF area, search for RickLederman in this FF area for more.

    Keep in touch!

    Rick

OK...so off thread but I have to ask....why the right front? Are the potholes all on the right side, is it purely random? I wonder if sometimes we judge the left front (i.e. in front of our eyes) vs. what is offset.

I actually purchased the BMW "Sport Wheel Road Hazard Insurance" for our X5M....has paid for itself a few times.

Right front is usually the hardest to see for most LHD drivers. I have had that experience too and because Im looking over there for potholes Ive sometimes hit the drivers side with a pothole because Im now less focused over there.

Thank you for sharing my friend! I am really happy to hear a few of you guys drive it in the winter without much worry as I cannot think of a single car on the planet that would make winter more enjoyable, haha.
