What's going on in this picture

OK, no airline guys respond (or just post, "got it"). Let's give the GA guys a chance. This is a shot of the 747-8 PFD. It's probably close to what most other Boeing ND's look like. Light GA aircraft have more complicated displays nowadays. Anyways, do you notice anything unusual? If so, what's the cause?

If you know, maye just post...."got it". Try and give others a chance to play.

To be fair, I'm not a pilot, but I do watch a lot of WW2 documentaries.


Although I do have a guess. Curious to see if I'm even in the ballpark.

Been there, done that and a whole lot worse.

 

Well, for my Cessna 182, you're about 24,000 feet too high and going about 340 KTAS too fast.

Not sure what is exactly "wrong" but the things I see on the PFD are:
- your nose is about 3 degrees above the horizon
- your GS is just slightly helped by a tailwind.
- you're crabbing into the wind coming from the right, but only a few degrees of correction.
- your magnetic heading bug is a few degrees to the right of where your nose is pointing yet you don't seem to be turning. (I assume the autopilot is not tracking the mag heading bug).

Not sure what is unusual.

One thing that seems odd is the "yellow arc" and red line on your airspeed indicator is not much higher than your current airspeed (red line is at 305 KIAS) and there is another "yellow arc" just below your airspeed (starting at 249 KIAS and below).

It's a beautiful day with blue skies and you are flying over a dirt field. The problem, the runway is not in sight. Am I right?

 

Maybe if they were steam gauges...

 

The numbers to the left indicate climb rate I assume, but what is the "gauge" to the right of the altimeter? Elevator trim?

And what are the two black hockey-stick things on the main display? Should they be on the same level as the horizon?

 

I'm going to hazard a guess you forgot to do something on your climb through FL180? Your altimeter should be set to 29.92.

Aside from the fact that it looks so simple, compared to what I look at in a 35 year old turboprop!

I'm a GA guy, so I'll pipe up. I'm going with 281kt IAS doesn't jibe with Mach .838.
That would be more like 620kts IAS.

 

More or less. I believe N708PC was on a Ports o' Call 720, but it would be cool if it had been on a 990... particularly since it's on a 980 now!

 

I don't see a temp on the display so I'm going in assuming -60 degrees. Using my trusty MB-4A whiz wheel I get 477 knots TAS from .838 Mach. From there I use 36,000 feet, -60 and 477 to get 263 knots calibrated airspeed which is fairly close to 281 knots indicated but something is amiss. I'm not gonna go beyond that as to avoid giving it away.

I'm sitting in the backyard by the pool with a drink and just grabbed a whiz wheel as I was pretty sure this was not correct. If anyone cares to critique my whiz wheel skills feel free to sound off as I'm kinda rusty and slightly tipsy.
