Timing Belt Question

Hi all, does anybody know of a car or person that did not do their belt service and had major engine damage?

 

That is the second most asked question here.

OK, I'll bite; what's the first? How much should a "major" cost?

 

Not even close, John. I think it's either:

What kind of oil should I run? or...
How often should I change my timing belts?

But I could be wrong...

 

And yet no real answer.

Any time now along will come a dozen or so answer Nazi's saying there is no question asked too many times and claiming the search function works badly and you can't find anything even if you tried.

They are full of **** on both counts.

I have had many employees either work for me or under me over the years and if any ever came to me with a question they could so easily answer themselves with just a little effort on their part I would have to ask "why are you wasting my time?". Not to mention the serious undermining of my confidence in them that they had just caused.


Do a search. There are more posts and threads addressing this exact question than you can read before the fall season starts. I suggest confining your search to the V8 sections. 90% of it is there due to the aversion of doing preventative service.

If you still have questions after reading all that crap, by all means get back to us.

 

Instead of giving you a hard time, I'll actually try to answer your question. Ferrari released a bulletin (attached) that all 8 cylinder engines are to have belts replaced every 30k mile or 3 years, whichever comes first.

Most feel this was a revenue generator. Most will state 4-5 years is acceptable. Many factors such as how the car is driven can play a role.

The risk is a broken belt will likely result in valve destruction (and perhaps more)

I'll be changing my belts next winter (4 year interval) maybe I could go longer but I'd rather not take the risk.

Great sentiment but you didn't answer his question either. At least I guided him to find it. Might try not only a little reading comprehension but also understanding the old adage about teaching someone how to fish next time.

Brian, for as experienced as you are, you come here mostly to give people crap instead of helping. The amount of effort you expend with unhelpful posts, you could expend the same effort actually helping people.

Such a simple maintenance task that anybody can do ... f**k knows why owners don't do it ... I do it when I purchase a $1000 banger!

my opinion with a 308 based driveline replace the belts at 4 years.having said that miles of course should be a consideration but I don't see anyone using their Ferrari as a daily driver.belt and tensioner replacement on these engines is a breeze.no special tools required and if you can read and follow directions it is a piece of cake.owning a Ferrari is much like boat ownership.You almost have as much fun drinking beer and working on it in the back yard as operating it.have fun

 

The most asked is "how often should I change my belts...."

A strong third would be low mileage/garage queen related content.

The answer is yes, there are incidents, and there are plenty of threads about it. I think there is even a rebuild thread or two lurking.

 

I, for sure one of many, always read Brian's posts. The subtle (OK, not so subtle) inferences give me more than a few chuckles, and more often as not, I learn something too. Just my 0.02c.

This forum has chased away too many real advisors, be grateful some still remain....

Yes, It happened to me twice!

but never on a Ferrari though!

Once the idler pulley bolt snapped most probably because it was overtightened. and once the waterpump bearing went after a belt change

 

I know where the Timing Belts are located but I don't think any Ferrari has a Timming Belt.

 

I have a F360 with a new clutch. New Hill Engineering release bearing and new release bearing sensor. Shifts through every gear all gears during self test. I can shift through all the gears with paddles. When the key on engine off. Will not shift if the engine is running. Engine off I can see the release bearing moving full travel. Engine running the release bearing move about a 1/4" at best. Any Ideas?
