    Ryan- Lots of moving parts in that sequence, thanks. Reminds me of when I was riding around in the Mid-East and Europe in the 60s in C-118s. Lots of smoke and fire on start.

    When I was a little kid I remember watching the TWA Connie, Super Connie and Super G's firing up after taking on pax in Albuquerque. Lots of smoke.

    The old airport (now museum) had about 6 gates and had TWA (Connie and Martin 4-0-4), early Frontier (DC-3) and Continental (Convair 240/340 and later Viscount).

    All radials (except the Viscount) but the Connies smoked the most.


    That may be why, to this date, the Constellation and the DC-3 are my favorite airliners.

    When I was young and living in San Juan with my parents, my dad was able to get passes to the Pan Am Clipper Club at SJU and I used to sit and watch the action. The smoke (and, occasionally, flame) emanating from the R-3350s in the Connies and DC-7s made me think that the airplane was about to catch fire! It's remarkable how long it takes for the smoke to disappear - well over a minute.

    (Of course, I also noted how much of the runway - in retrospective, a seemingly dangerous percentage - the 707s and DC-8s took to takeoff before the advent of turbofan engines. The difference after the turbofans took over was very noticeable.)

    I grew up around one. This one was always at our local airport, few stories and updates on restoration would come out in local paper.

    SCCA solo nationals would have turns and cones within few hundred yards of her.

    Where there is smoke there is 55 wt. oil. After cranking the props through on a B-17 or C-60 and many other big piston birds the puddle of oil from the bottom cylinders left on the ramp is just part of what is still in there. I think I remember that a .250 dia. hole is in the bottom of the exhaust ring for drainage before starting. There is a tickler coil that keeps the spark plugs firing the entire length of the power stroke.
