I'd love to come do an engine and gear oil change if there's room. I haven't done either on a 355, so I'd need some Stoogpervision... I ordered the Ricambi kit, but what should I do for oil?
That depends. Engine oil I always went with what was on sale. But some others really are brand loyal. There is a scientific way to tell if your oil is doing it's job. We can talk about that at Stoogapollooza. Gear oil buy what your car likes. Yes really! I have had good luck with mobil1 available everywhere. Fewer like royal purple. Most like Redline. Universally Redline lovers like shockproof and few like MTL. A poll would reveal shockproof is #1.
Just ordered redline oils. Anything else I should bring besides beer? I have: 10 qt redline 5w40 6 qt redline 75w90 Ricambi oil change kit
It sure looks like Stoogapooluza is a go! Last time I started a fire about changing neglected brake fluids. We had some really nasty looking brake fluid come from some cars at the last Stooge-B-Que and I'm sure those who flushed brakes were glad they did it. This time I'm asking you guys to think about your cooling system. There are many dissimilar metals and various aluminum alloys all dissolving in your coolant. I don't have to tell you guys how important coolant is. Good coolant is extremely important especially to really hot running engines like the 355. An annual flush is not too often especially if you are not using extended life. Do a little research and let's start up a conversation about E. gycol, extended life, 50/50 mixes, Blue BMW magic juice, reverse osmosis water, straight water, NoRossion, Water Wetter, and Evans coolant.
So what is the date of the event? Went through the thread and didn't see it... maybe getting senile...
September 20th is the date and its in Sherman Oaks. Ill pm out the address and a map when we get closer to the date. I'm due for a coolant change and will go my oil again it time allows. I have room for 6-8 cars in the driveway at a time for work to be done. Need to talk tools. I only have one floor jack and two jack stands. We will need more. I have a compressor and impact wrench as well as a battery impact. A reasonable set of hand tools but we will need more for multiple cars. I do not have any Ferrari specific off sized tools so bring em if you got em. I have plenty of jugs for the old oil. Thinking about the food. I'll roast a turkey (leaving the deep frying to Vince), a deli platter, some salads and whatever else I feel like putting together. The outdoor kitchen is under construction so the actual gas bbq is out but I could break out the old charcoal one if anyone wants burgers. Feel free to bring what you want. I'll pick up some water, beer and sodas to get started but if you have a favorite, bring that. Let me know if I am missing anything.
Coolant is very important, I will bring some killerglass quick view tubes so you can see your cooling system run live in living color
I've read 2 gallons of BMW coolant diluted with distilled water and one bottle of Redline water wetter is recommended.
It this OEM BMW coolant that you are referring to? BMW Dealer item or do some of the local parts shops sell it? I've seen various brands that say they are BWM compliant. Trying to get my parts in order. Auto Zone sells the Redline Water Wetter.
Now what fun is a Stoogeappallooza unless all the original Stooges are there? My plane ticket is booked, and I'll see all you suckaducks on the 20th.
Many are fans of OEM BMW blue colored coolant you can buy online via BMW sources or at the counter of your local BMW dealer. It really is good stuff. Personally, I believe is annual flushes just like the brakes then the coolant you use doesn't make as much difference. I like BMW coolant and extended life both used for shorter intervals than recommended. I think EL could be 5 years! For a Ferrari that's a lifetime. Often I just run water wetter and water with frequent changes.
FBB: BMW coolant good for the 328 as well? Ernie: I'll have to send you my address for the event. I was going to send out maps a few days before. When are you flying out?
FYI. Pep Boys has 25% off for online orders over $100. Order online and pick up at the store. If you like Royal Purple oil, this puts it a $7.50 QT. They also have 40% off Mobil 1 through 9/7 if you like that product.
Damn, I saw the guys taking to you on the phone (or computer) at the last Stoogefest, but never thought I'd see you come back out for one. Just another reason to hate missing this get together. Have a safe flight Ernie. Henry
