but she is getting up in years and she has sat.
So look for lots of rubber to need replacing.
And leatherique the heck out of the interior so the try leather doesn't crack on you.

 

First of all allow me to congratulate you on the fine find. A Mondial for $2K is nothing to sneeze at and it could be sold as is for $10K in a heartbeat. I wish we could all make 5x or more on our money so quickly.

In your shoes I would buy the car and find out from some experienced people what you have and what it would cost to get running again before ever laying a hand on it. From there you can make the educated decision as to what you would like to do with it but without a doubt you should scoop this one up.

I believe with photos finally revealed and the OP's story being quite consistent and honest as he learned more about the car that they naysayers can go eat a big slice of humble pie

 

A $2k Mondial is a steal. I wouldn't back out of the deal. Part it out and you'll definitely get $10k as Rob says. Congrats

 

I am happy to see the car and that it is real. I say that if you wanted to own a Ferrari then you got in at a fantastic price. Yeah, it may take some time and money to get it back on the road but if you can get someone who knows the mechanicals to go through it thoroughly I think the car has lots of cool potential.

Minor detail: the 308 wheels will not fit the Mondial 3.2 -- offsets are quite different. No big deal, just be aware.

 

Will not fit the later 3.2 with ABS, but have seen 308 wheels i believe on Mondis before.

I agree with BigRed: part it out or clean it up and sell it out of State. If it has no EPA, DOT papers, and is euro, there is no way its going to pass CA inspections or smog. Other states, like mine (GA) don't care, so there is a market for the car if you pass it on. ( No, I do not want a Mondial, I have a 328 to get rid of as it is). Congrats on the car, and good luck with it.

PS:There is a thread on a Lotus board I frequent about the nightmares a guy went through trying to get a late 80's Lotus Esprit (like mine) to pass inspection in some part of CA this year. It was a USA / CA spec car and they gave him fits. Good luck with a euro anything. Lots of $$$$ and time to deal with bureaucracy, AFTER the car is running correctly. Not worth it. Time IS money.

I dont understand the negative feedback, anyone here would be happy to have landed the same deal you just did. I had a similar response to a car I bought that was a lot worse but Im glad I did!

For 2k even if it doesn't run you've lived a dream. I thought this was a bunk thread but to see that shiny REAL Ferrari ( so it wasn't a 308) is amazing!

If nothing else it will be fun to try and start it. I'm still holding out for the possibility that a battery is all it will need, unlikely as that is.

Good find. I wouldn't back out, if I were in that position. Nothing wrong with the 3.2 Mondial coupe. If it does turn out to be non-registrable in CA due to their emissions nonsense, sell it out of state. I'll double your money, and there's not even a safety inspection here

 

Whatever happens, it is a great buy. If Dubel wrenches on it himself, the project will be more than affordable. My first Ferrari was a totaled Mondial8 that I put back together myself. I had fun with it for a year after I fixed it and sold it to help pay for school.

Even if you can't get it through smog, a simple call to John Bennet in MT, set up LLC and run the car through MT. No smog and much cheaper than the People's Republic of CA to register. He handles the whole thing.

Write the check and get started!

 

As others have said DO NOT back out of that deal. You could more than double your money in a couple days. Try that somewhere else!!!

It looks complete. Get it home and have someone go over it to see what it needs (I'm sure there are a lot, but not everything needs to be done at once).

To me, it's the best of the Mondials. I would take one (that) in a heartbeat! I could actually haul my kids around....

I am really happy to be eating Humble Pie right now - I never thought this would turn out to be a genuine Ferrari of any sort, but there it is under 10 years of "stuff" - could the fairy tale continue with a new battery, change of the vital fluids and drive off into the sunset?

That's a hell of a score 3.2 coupes are great driving cars as well as rare finds as they made a lot more cabriolet than coupes. To put things in financial perspective an 86 mondial coupe in decent condition with all services current is worth mid twenties.

Please disregard all the "well meant" advise to part it out and what not. How can people say that if the true condition is not known?

Exciting buy for the OP. Congratulations. I agree with several on here, get it looked over thoroughly by a competent Ferrari tech to give you an idea of whether it should be brought back or passed down the road. I hope all that debris on top of it kept it warm and safe and the car is happy.
