Yah, not accurate. The trend is correct though and it is a great barometer for what is happening today. I could see a "1" GT4 being worth 70k personally. But I also believe a "1" GTB would then command 100k. You would have to hear from the people selling them. Surprise - no one is selling perfect 308s these days : ) Sidenote: I don't even know what a "1" truly is these days. With the somewhat-current appreciation for patina, what is a "1"? This use to be a *perfect* restoration to factory specs. Now people want original cars. So I somewhat object to the grading system in general.
Just sold on Ebay $41,100 - condition 3-4? Do you think because Euro Model sold for a premium above US model? Needs Paint, probably engine and interior..easy to spend add't 20-30K to bring to Cond 1/2...is it then worth 60-70K? Ferrari 308 GT4 | eBay
Hagerty is publishing trends as they interpret them. Nothing more. And, would you ever imagine that an insurer would inflate values to increase premiums? My opinion of the GT4 value is biased!
That's either one of the most unusual GT4s I've seen, or it has some seriously questionable changes. Either way it's a strong price. I'd love to pick one of these up someday.
Very high price; especially given some of the changes - ugh. Euro worth more for sure. Could be more than 20-30k to make it perfect - really depends. Is it then worth 70k? Not traditionally, but perhaps now. I haven't seen a GT4 sell for that personally, but it could be...seems like Hagerty thinks so for some reason. There was a guy that fully restored a GT4 here like 12 months ago I want to say. He was having a lot of problems selling it for even 50. Market has obviously moved substantially.
This is what makes the value go up. Its like the 308 GTB/S/i. One person pays 40, the next guy asks 45, the next guy asks 50, etc etc. Before you know it, GT4's 3-4 condition are selling for 45-50 all day long. There aren't a whole lot of them out there plus they're relatively unknown. 95% of the people that see it have no idea what it is but tell me its an awesome looking car.
Along with the Mondial it's still the entry level Ferrari. A lot of first time buyers have no idea that it's not a "real" Ferrari.
Well, I am probably out of step with most other GT4 owners, but I find this news to be a buzzkill. I can tinker, experiment and autocross with abandon when I think it is an entry level Fcar worth only something in the low 20s (what I paid for mine). If it is now 2x that and maybe soon 3x and becomes a collector item, now I may start to feel guilty about the accelerated use/abuse. You guys would shudder with horror if you knew what my original plans were for this car when I bought it. But after rebuilding it and driving it, I know it can not be changed. I just hope that it does not become so valuable that I can't tear it up to Home Depot, squeeze it in a tight parking spot, leave it with the windows down and throw stuff in the backseat, and tear it up home without worrying about my investment. Maybe at some point the car needs to belong to a collector, not an abuser, but for now I am going to put my head in the sand and pretend it is still a cheap Ferrari
You made the exact point that troubles me if prices rise...I have a 328 that I drive whenever/wherever I want. It goes to the grocery store, the Hdware store, the guitar shop, wherever. If prices do rise as people are speculating, I will reluctantly quit driving it and turn it into an occasional weekend local car because I don't want to "hurt" the value and then sell it at some point. I just have no particular use for a car I'm afraid to drive. I realize a lot of folks would say, "who cares, drive it anyway! Fix it if it gets broke" I admire folks with that point of view but it doesn't work for me because I'd be worrying about how the "fixing" it would lower the value. As a car in the roughly 45-50k range, I don't care but if it went to 75-80 and up, that would be the end of it for me as a car I would own/drive around.
I hope for my own personal reasons the Mondial market kind of stays flat as plan on picking up a Mondial this winter/spring. I love them!
You guys are kind of funny. For years we have been saying that the car is due to increase for a variety of reasons. Now that it has you seem hesitant to accept the realization of your desires. At 40K, the car is still a car and you should enjoy them. At 80K, you have to start wondering if maybe it's time to capitalize on the gain and move on to another "affordable" Ferrari. You will have many choices, I am sure. I for one have always rooted for the GT4 being the next Dino in collectibility, but to a lesser degree. I also root for the 365/400/412 model since it resembles a stretched GT4. You owners are very fortunate. Enjoy the ride. Dave Stacy is the real hero here since he has both a GT4 and a 400 in manual. I am envious. The wine thing doesn't hurt either. I know of a glass 308 owner who is going to be in this situation really soon, eh Greg?
I hope the sale goes through. We have seen a few pop back up as as no sale when the buyer backs out after seeing the car.
