Apparently Charlie hasn't even noticed all the Ferrari messages in Italian.
Shouldn't be too tough to fool.

    Charlie's not silly. ;)

The note from the FIA goes on to clarify what is and isn't permitted over the radio:

Clear as mud now? OK, good! ;)

    Cheers,

    No.
    ;)

I'm trying to figure out what general rule determines what is and isn't allowed.

    What is "learning of gears"?

"We have a problem on your teammates car and have to retire". is allowed per
    - Indication of a potential problem with a competitor's car during a race

"Your car has a problem and have to retire".
Can't tell if it allowed or not.....:)

Can they inform Driver B why Driver A retired?

Me too!..... This is gonna be "gnarly" I feel.....

The *concept* (I think anyway ;)) is the driver "must drive the car alone and unaided". Which I don't have a problem with. No coaching allowed at this level.

But is telling him to, eg, change his diff settings "coaching"?

    I dunno.....

I *think* it's about what gears get selected as he goes thru the 'box. As we know, they've got 8 (forward) gears these days, but I don't think they use them all at all circuits.

    Eg, Monaco, they'd use 1-2-3-4-5-6
    Monza; 1,2,4,5,7,8

I dunno, but seems the back room geeks would make that call for him. Possibly (partly) based on wind speed/direction etc. But that's no longer allowed - he's got to do it himself? Maybe?

But I could be completely wrong...... ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

It would be easier to memorize a bunch of one-time code phrases than the FIA's crazy list.

Gear ratios were determined ahead of time based on prior experience even in the old days so I don't see your point. In any case this is something they'd have down in P1 so what's the race time prohibition? I'm also assuming that radio transmission is free in practice. Nes't pas?

Or just scramble any radio communication that by-pass race control.

    Nope! Not any more;

So, 8 fixed ratios for the whole season.

Then, I don't think they use all of them at every race - They can 'choose' which get used, but they can't change the ratios themselves.

While I'm guessing here, let's say the wind changes direction overnight - You may well want to use, say, 4th rather than 5th 'down the back straight' in that scenario.

And no, these new rules about radio transmissions apply at all times, from FP1 thru the end of the race.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Nope. Outlawed *long* ago;

    Sorry!......

I actually thought they mandated English, as per a Matchett comment at some point, but that's not true. As long as they're not encrypted (they used to be), it's all good......

Now, I wonder when we'll see the first Swahili driver on the grid, but that's another debate. ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Since when radio communications between teams and drivers have been scrambled?

    Until Charlie outlawed it!

From memory, I'm going to say the late 80's, early 90's, thru 2000'ish.

A few years either way, but for sure, their radio comms were encrypted for a while. Stopped the other guys listening, obviously.......

    Cheers,

As far as I can see, they're still legal.... Nothing I've read says transmissions must be in English - just that they can't be 'coded'.

Let's face it, the "high tech world" is what is killing F1 as a sport, and transforming it into technological warfare with results depending on the budget you can gather.

As a sport, it's value is declining, and it seems the FIA is struggling to keep it as a show.

The fact that teams are now recruiting teenagers groomed over the radio to race their cars confirms that.

We could dispense with the GPs and decide the WDC by a competition on simulators.

To me it seems like the veterans are the ones asking how to drive over the radio rather than the teenagers lol.

    *Always* been that way.... On all points;

    - the sport is dying.
    - technology will kill it.
    - biggest budget wins.

Yet, it continues on it's merry way with a full calendar and grids......
    ;)

I think you are the type to bury his head into the sand repeating to himself that everything will be alright in the end.

F1 is a fragile edifice right now, a giant with feet of clay, and a lot of its audience is getting p**ed off too.

    You could be right.

But I'd bet big money we'll *still* be having this same debate in 20 years......

    Cheers,
    Ian
