they are a remarkable thing. The first purpose built WRC car, not a modified road car. FIAT made them use the Montecarlo shape, for obvious marketing reasons, but the central monocoque is a bespoke structure with inbuilt crumple zones and massive torsional stiffness. Twin shocks at each corner, extremely long suspension travel with long control arms like an open wheeler, the chassis can absorb huge punishment. Which was needed for tough events like the Safari rally. Abarth got the supercharging wrong at first, but the final EVO II setup was reliable and very powerful, up to 500hp from 2 litres - to change output just fit a different size pulley on the blower! Last 2WD car to win the WRC. As the video says, they live in the shadow of the Stratos, but are a better car.
