Intriguing - a Ray Grimm, of Rancho Santa Fe, California owned my old Silhouette (#40052) at some point. Apparently he bought it from Motorcar Gallery in Fort Lauderdale and sold it via Gary Bobileff.

I am not 100% convinced of the color. I also have some old photos that make the car look dark...when it's not. Have to dig them up.

Also, story I forgot. The reason I search for the original owner back 2010/11 is that around the time I had the car painted, Sandy Degroot contacted me to say there was a woman who contacted her after seeing my car online. I can only assume she was Googling the original owner for memory sake. She knew the car and that she would like me to call her. I called. She dated the owner when the car arrived in the US. She confirmed the color. Immediately recognized it from the color. She confirmed the owner was alive. She confirmed in not so many words that that was a very wild time in her lives.

The very next day I set out to find the owner. Took my chances and finally communicated with him. He confirmed several things back then. Last weekend I reached out again.

I can only assume that reports of his beheading were exaggerated.

The rest of the story I read seems very interesting and realistic. Thank you Joe for that.

Great photos! IMHO your car's current color is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen. I wouldn’t change a thing.

    Sorry Raymond, Christian is correct.

Blu Acapulco Metallizzato was introduced as early as 1978 (perhaps even earlier - I haven't checked), and there were at least 5 different LP400S S1 finished in Blu Acapulco Metallizzato. They were: 1121006, 1121068, 1121078, 1121090, 112104 etc.

    Peter,

I made my post late last night, and this morning with a clear head after a 2-mile run I am 100% sure your car left the factory Blu Acapulco Metallizzato.

    Why?

Factory records + Period images + Proof the car has since been repainted = sufficient corroboration beyond any reasonable doubt.

Yes we know the factory made mistakes & cars were changed, but most of the time the factory records were good for a reliable reference. Also, I believe that in my publication efforts I have scanned more period images than most, and I'm quite certain the car in those images is Blu Acapulco Metallizzato.

This should come as nothing but great news to you because Blu Acapulco Metallizzato has to be one of the most alluring colors ever bestowed upon a Countach.

But, as Larry said, you don't have to change a thing (its close enough anyway), just enjoy the car!

    Correct.

Please add to my aforementioned list 1054 & 1066, thus confirming that at least 7 LP400S S1 were finished in Blu Acapulco Metallizzato.

Not only the car's chassis number but also the car's original livery is quite close to #1121002 (Walter Wolf car). And Blu Acapulco is very nice. Nothing is better for this car. It should be changed. The sooner, the better. This car deserves being stripped to bare metal and then repainted in original Blu Acapulco.

But if Peter prefers the current colour "Blu X", yes... it is his car and his decision.

Raymond, Blu Acapulco came no later than 1978. And there is enough evidence that #1121006 left the factory in Blu Acapulco, as Joe stated today.

I agree with everything you said but one aspect: in my opinion, the car now is not close enough to the original. It is far away from being original with that colour.

But at least, it is blue metallic. If Peter likes it, or even likes it more than Blu Acapulco, to me it's ok not to change the car although I CLEARLY prefer Blu Acapulco for this car/chassis number. Peter must simply be aware that then the car CLEARLY is not original.

Anyway it is great that Peter received and posted the photos. Very important for him, and we all like them!

I understand what you are saying.

As Countachs become more valuable, enthusiasts everywhere have stronger feelings about originality. IMHO putting a car back to its original guise is the ultimate nod of respect to the original makers by the current keeper, and certainly a course of action I would pursue. In fact I know of another S1 that is no longer Blu Acapulco Metallizzato that probably will be again one day. But we must also understand that a person can do whatever they want with their property...

Nothing else I said. BTW certain people already cared for originality when the cars still were cheap.

I suppose that a lot of people in the classic car scene also became more experienced with time, and therefore are more interested in originality, although the recent interest in originality for sure is additionally influenced by the rise in the vintage cars values. Learning by doing...

Fair enough Joe. But not convinced.
Where is the Acapulco Blu in the "painted 5 times"? Especially the first layer to the left. Then the color, right before being painted, beyond the 5th arrow, is darker than all the previous. Those 5 are light like Tahiti. A great mystery!
You guys have made your decision about 1006 and making sure everyone knows it. But there is more proof than not that it was not Acapulco. But since you guys are the decision makers, I'll leave this subject be :)
We are more interested in the layers of paint on the car, the original owner, the girldriend...than a piece of "factory" paper. Which in one breath people say it is reliable, then it is not. So the point is moot.
I'm happy with the color and I really Acapulco too...

I think a darker color sanded and imaged as shown will show up much lighter simply as a result of the sanding process, and the picture you provided shows this.

I don't think anyone is deciding on what they think the color is out of thin air, my personal basis for conclusion is a logical one, and it is based on Factory records + Period images + Proof the car has since been repainted = sufficient corroboration beyond any reasonable doubt, for me anyway.

As these cars go up in value these matters are more interesting to more people, like the Miura thread which concluded that 3586 = the Italian Job Film car.

But we are all entitled to an opinion where there is no absolute, and in any case, I think everyone likes the color it is today. Most important of all, you do.
