1979 Porsche 930 (...and 78's too!)

Porsche homologated the 3.3 liter Turbo as an extension in FIA Nr. 3076 on 1 Jan 78. Three chassis numbers are listed in Nr. 3076: 930.570.0001, 930.770.0001, and 930.870.0001. In addition to the 3.3 liter engine and various other changes (including weight, etc.), the extension for 930.870.0001 included details for the new brakes (304mm floating rotor fronts and fixed rears).

The Porsche 930’s last homologation was granted on 1 Mar ’82, Nr. B-208 for Group A/B racing for the completely new regulations introduced by FISA. Like Nr. 645 and Nr. 3076, B-208 featured 1975 Turbo S-CD 1337 on the cover. B-208 now homologated the “Turbo” as the “911 Turbo” since by this time, Porsche was manufacturing more than one turbo model.

This was an interesting time in Porsche racing history as the Porsche 956 would first compete in Group C for the World Sportscar Championship in 1982. The 935 had performed admirably in Porsche’s competition history summed up nicely by John Teague in “Motoring News” after the victory at 1979 Le Mans: “Now that it has won everything in endurance racing, the Porsche 935 must surely go down in history as one of the great sportscars of all time, ranking alongside the Jaguar D-type, the Ferrari Testa Rossa, the Ford GT40 and the Porsche 917.”

Under Group B regulations, six nearly-stock Porsche 930’s entered the 1983 Le Mans and this would be the best finish ever for the model at the 24 hour race. Until then, 1975 Turbo No. 20 held the honor by placing 15th in 1975. Of the Six 930’s 3.3 liter 930’s entered in 1983 one finished in 11th place. 1978 Porsche Turbo No. 96, chassis number 930.870.0039 finished 21st, still equipped with snorkel headlight washers.

This car is not my specialty, but I thought I'd pass along what I thought might be a good deal, if anyone is interested in RHD. Neat interior.

Porsche 930 Turbo

 

Found some nice factory photos of some early 3.3 turbos, courtesy of the 1979 porsche registry (Facebook). What strikes me as odd is the side window trim isn't anodized upon installation. It looks chrome. I know this topic has been discussed but I've always thought and read all 930s were black anodized. And chrome wasn't an option. These are US specs cars too.

I think it's just the lighting and the angle... it's a satin finish. Satin black, to me.

It isn't chrome.

 

Or it's just a protective cover. Maybe I'm just scrutinizing these cars too closely.

Has anyone ever heard of a Black Forest Racing engine, stroked to 3.5L with a larger Turno on a 930 Turbo?

I've got a 1979 930 turbo with that spec here in Brazil, bought it from a friend that imported it from the U.S in 2007.

Tried to contact the company, but did not receive a reply from them. I would like to know more about the engine, what has been done to it, and the reputaon of the company.

While I am not familiar with the name, a quick search identified a Black Forest Racing located in North Carolina. They have a picture of a modified 3.3 930 engine their site. Is this the one you tried to contact?

Black Forest Racing is located in N.C. as stated above. They've been around awhile and used to be down in Fla back in the 90's, same outfit run by John Forbes. They know the cars and have built a lot of engines and supported a few racers.. over the years.

As for the engine, 3.5 is not stroked, its just a piston & cylinder bore increase.

 

john is my friend and has worked on my car. I suspect the motor pictured is mine or bob sidi's. let me know if there is anything I can help you with regarding john. he will be doing valve adj on my 930 soon. he is an aircooled guy only and has special interest in 914/6 race cars.
