Atlas. Only been here a year, so Polar is a thing of the past aside from the operating certificate, which is still in use, obviously. Definitely hear a lot about the Polar days from your former coworkers though! Tried to get on with ANC when I was on the furlough list at K4, never got a bite. Heard its a pretty tight knit group from a former JAL guy who knows a number of your pilots.
That's how my school teaches us to fly 172s, but since we're headed for the airlines they reason that they're training us for airliners in the future. Works great for me still! Thank you for your replies, Lou and Nate!
Just a few random pics. Wingtip comparison, 747-8 and 777-200ER New ND software update. Pic taken in SFO. You can obviously see the closed runways. Hold short lines also depicted. Was in Seattle yesterday flying a "cherry charter". Beautiful day in Seattle. Sometimes we open the cockpit hatch to get some air moving in the cockpit instead of firing up the APU. Decided to take a shot with the iphone from hatch. Usually summer doesn't start until July 5th around here. (The weather is almost always crappy on the 4th) Starting early this year.
didn't seem too hard to me. I love nonboring landings! in my small plane if #1 I feel like I was riding a bull when landing or #2 about 200 ft. of the roll out is still on 1 wheel = fun landing!
Considering how many crosswind landings I've seen videos of at Narita, it appears that they laid out the runways badly when they designed the place. (But of course, they were probably restricted by other considerations like the surrounding terrain.)
Yeah, I remember that landing. I was in the jumpseat for that one as the "extra captain". Flight 109 from SFO. Believe me, it didn't look that great from the jumpseat. Not so much the bounces as the bank angle on touchdown. It's a weird feeling being in the jumpseat with no control over what's going on. I'm guessing all the pitch and bank angles look more exaggerated from the jumpseat too. Narita is one of those strange places when it comes to crosswinds. It wasn't actually blowing that hard during the approach. But when the wind is a southwesterly in Narita, it gets really bumpy with lots of shear. Sometimes with even 10 kts of wind. I too love challenging landings. Of course, after a long day, I'll take the easy ones anytime!
I occasionally encounter flight-deck crew riding in the back with the rest of us paying passengers and wonder how they like the lack-of-control feeling. I usually accuse them of being "back-seat drivers"!
So Lou, ever done one of these "waves" on a delivery flight? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnBr3enzW1I#t=24
Eh, no. And I guess I won't be doing one in the future. Not sure I could "compete" with that one! I did ask my company to do a flyby on my last pickup. Never got an answer. Assuming that meant no. Also asked if I could do a "wave", no reply. Looks like NCA will be picking up 3 more -8s in the next few months. Hopefully I'll get to go one more time. I believe they've been finished for quite some time. JA16KZ, 17KZ, and 18KZ.
OK... I watched it 3 times, just discovered that for some reason it skipped from 6 sec to 30 sec. No wave. Just got it to play the whole thing... That is definately a wave... wow.
Personally, and this is probably why I'm not a 747 pilot, I'd take "no reply" as an implicit "yes"..... "Well, you didn't say I couldn't do it!......" But, as I said, neither is it my job on the line! Cheers, Ian
Agree, Taz. That uses a lot of energy and the airplane could handle it being fairly light but not a prudent thing to do on climb out.
Oh wow.... that looked pretty sketchy....especially the roll to the right, I thought it was going to drag a wing tip. I am as far away from being a 747 pilot as its possible to be but that just looked foolish thing to do, that low, that slow and at that angle of attack, that must of used a lot of energy up. Still they lived to tell the tale and the video looks awesome
Agreed, makes me a little uncomfortable watching that, not a lot of wingtip clearance on that first roll to the left. I get doing the wave, but why do it immediately after liftoff and why so extreme? Just waiting a couple of seconds would have given him a lot more altitude. If he's not a Chief Pilot or program manager I'll bet he's looking for a new job because you know Cargolux has seen the video.
Thanks for the compliments guys. My landing yesterday in Tokyo wasn't all that great! Maybe I've been flying the Eagle too much. Yeah, that 747 "wave" looked a little strange. Not enought opposite rudder? Too much? Just looked a bit awkward to me. A lot of wing moving around. Adverse yaw, dutch roll?,.....something going on.
Lou- Affirmative, she was giving a bunch of negative feedback. Must have been uncomfortable inside to have the aircraft not responding like you thought she would. Bad time for a compressor stall.
How's the weather? The F1 circus "needs" to get out (from Narita I guess) and on to Russia. Stories are nothing's flying right now? Ian
