Hey! I was saying that he was no friend. Whether or not you have others is beyond the scope of my knowledge. But I'm beginning to get some idea.
Very much agree. Investigations will be ongoing & lessons learnt. Dr Harstein did a good series on what goes on when Charlie tells the medical car to roll. Anyway, there's very specific locations in which that & the ambulance will park in order to try and "protect" the scene - Similar to what someone mentioned about fire engines above. He's also just made a couple of (speculative) entries about Jules accident/likely condition as well as a description of what Prof Sid equipped medical centers must be capable of and how they're used. As for cranes, most places aren't like Monaco where a handful of big beams can reach "everywhere" - They just can't cover the "real estate" that a tractor can. I suspect (hope?) we may see them outfitted with energy absorbing "skirts" as Is suggested. OTOH, it was a terrible freak accident in very freak conditions (getting wetter & darker). What are the chances of it happening again? Generally, these guys don't fall off the road under yellows. Godspeed Jules. Ian Sorry - for unknown reasons, I can't paste the link.
Searching around his site, I came across this again. Thought it was good enough to share here..... Prof Sid! RIP again to one of the true legends of the sport! Cheers, Ian
I don't know if you saw the report but Andrea De Ceasaris died in a Rome motorcycle accident today. Funny old world.
I'm sure all those things, and probably others we'll never know. FWIW, the Sky guys claimed it was the race promoter (Honda, I believe?) that made the call to stay with the schedule. Cheers, Ian
Yep. I posted my condolences & some comments in his thread - As I think you already know, he was "my" first guy in F3. Very sad indeed. Ian
I *believe* they still own the circuit and are the promoters. (Guess they don't mind taking it in the shorts from Bernie! ) Seems to me that the conditions they ran in were at least OK though. After all, they ran most of the race on inters..... The Monday morning QB's, or 'woulda, coulda, shoulda' brigade find it easy to criticize from their couches as usual. Get well soon Jules, Ian
Jules Bianchi suffers severe head injury after crashing into recovery vehicle during Japanese Grand Prix | Daily Mail Online An additional photo I haven't seen yet. Also a quote from hamilton saying he's raced in conditions that were worse than today, saying "todays conditions were not that bad".
There is a big tug of war going on behind the scenes between Suzuka and Fuji for the GP. IIRC Honda owns Suzuka and Toyota Fuji so I'm not surprised if Honda made that push
Ok, I caught hell for saying the TV broadcast time was a factor but I stand by my statement that the TV broadcast time could have had an influence on the accident. The light was failing. All the drivers said this. The race could have been run earlier in the morning but it's not the optimum TV time. The race should also have been called earlier also due to the light issue and the slow start. How much TV revenue would have been lost if the race was actually cancelled after a few safety car laps? TV does have an influence on when the races start and when the checker flag falls. There needs to be some accountability and transparency on this issue. It's more than just money.
Every driver and team knows the score. Not one would jeopardised their involvement over anything that happened right up to the accident. Afterwards every opinion changed. F1 is so much safer now than decades past its ridiculous. I'd still like to see some kind of roll cage around the driver's head as I've said in the past with much negative response. Chalk his injuries up to a slightly better view of his helmet.
Not true today. Can't remember exactly when the rule changed back, but I'd guess about 4-5 years back now (?). Cheers, Ian
