16 October 2014 – Fernando Alonso is to leave Ferrari at the end of the current season after five campaigns on board, Luca di Montezemolo, who departed his role as company President earlier this week, has confirmed.

Speculation over the 33-year-old's Formula 1 future has intensified since Sebastian Vettel announced his Red Bull exit and Christian Horner clarified that the four-time World Champion will be racing for Ferrari from 2015.

"Alonso is leaving for two reasons. One, because he wants another environment. Two, because he is an age at which he cannot wait to win again," explained di Montezemolo, who has been replaced by Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Ferrari parent company Fiat, in a wide-ranging interview on Italian television programme Porta a Porta.

Alonso joined Ferrari in 2010 but has failed to add to the two world titles he claimed at Renault. He has finished runner-up in the championship in three of the past four seasons, while he sits sixth in this year's standings.

"He was disappointed that he has not won over these years and needs new stimulus," added di Montezemolo.

Alonso has been tipped to return to McLaren next season, when the squad's works engine deal with Honda begins. While there is also talk of the Spaniard taking a sabbatical, with a view to securing a seat at Mercedes in 2016, he stated at last weekend's Russian Grand Prix that there is "probably not a big risk" of him doing so.

Throwing this out there for general reaction from the community.

In the lead up to this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, there was a lot of noise about Ferrari
making an important announcement which was scheduled to take place at the track on
    the morning of the race.

This led to wild speculation as to Ferrari potentially entering the WEC LMP-1 category. Since
Alonso was already the honorary starter for the race and Montemezolo was to be in attendance,
the speculation gained a lot of momentum through a many various motor sport media
    outlets.

Then, as the time for the big announcement was scheduled to be made, the press conference
    was cancelled without explanation.

Could this have been LdM's way of firing back at the parent company somehow by creating
this distraction? The whole sordid episode seemed rather curious.

Been following f1 for almost 40 years this is the strangest silly season afaicr. This stuff was usually sorted by Monza. Fred may be waiting to see if the mb situation blows up to grab a seat there but i can't see that happening.

When's brawn done with the garden?

I think Fred has no faith in Allison to do a good car so he's moving on lest he waste another year.

The cars have been bad for a while now, but this non comms and rumors stuff is getting out of hand. When Horner makes announcements before Ferrari, way before that is and LdM throws departing blows, you know that management is falling apart.

Who the hell is in control of Ferrari? Apparently not the ones appointed.

I foresee Grande Casino, a fall back to the dark ages of the eighties.

    On so many levels.

Whether he jumped or was pushed Alonso is well out of there. Assuming the rumors are true.

    Sad.

Oh, those happy days when Stefano Domenicali was Sporting Director, Luca di Montezemolo leading the company, and Alonso happy at the wheel...
It was such a long time ago...or was it?

Perhaps they need to fall "at the bottom of the hole", then a catharsis, then climb out. Question is: where / when will they be truly at the bottom; can they fall deeper than when they are now?

What a shame. You all are going to find out quickly where Ferrari is really at without Alonso's supreme talent behind the wheel.
