I have Fabspeed headers on my car. The chrome has all kinds of surface rust on them. Not pretty. This winter during the engine out I intend to pull them and have them coated. I have not decided on a color. Black? White? Grey? Anyone have coated headers that would want to post up pictures of the engine bay? I would love to see them....especially any white ones. Thanks.
I had the same problem with my fabspeed headers. So when i did my major in may i coated them black and they look like new again.I will take a photo for you.If i was to do it again i would not do black again because the headers dont stick out as much now. As for as the engine bay temps being lower,i found no differance.I Will say that my fabspeed headers are still in great shape and now have about 65000km so they do last.
Had mine done white by Zircotec. Looks stunning, and has held up perfectly for 1.5 years so far. I will look for a pic.
I was advised from Bradan not to go with white or silver ceramic coating as the color starts to fade and distort over time. They recommeded black... so thats the route I took. The headers still look brand new Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Purdy! The color fade is what i was worried about with white....but Jet Hot says no worries. Grey would seem a nice compromise. I would prefer white...I think.
Trust me... Im with you 100% I wanted white and still would have personally preffered it. But they know better thatn I do ... and I trust them... It looks INCREDIBLE in the engine bay... The Zonda R uses white ceramic coating on its exhaust... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I wonder how bad they fade? I trust Bradan as well. Helped me a ton....perhaps I'll give Dan a call. Black would be fine too as that would go with my red / black theme on the car. How "glossy" is your black finish? Flat?
I had my berlinetta boxer sport headers coated. they were done by jet hot. I chose the aluminum color but properly I should have chosen white. at any rate the quality is very good. pcb Image Unavailable, Please Login
From Swain Tech website: "Other companies apply cosmetic header coatings that have minimal effects on heat insulation and instead are purely for cosmetics. These header coatings are shiny or colored and really will not improve performance, but they do look nice. Swain Tech Coatings is the only company to offer a true insulating thermal barrier for exhaust parts. This external thermal barrier is applied approximately .012″ thick, has a white matte finish and does a tremendous job of keeping the heat inside of the pipes to improve scavenging and reduce under hood temperatures." Seems coating choice depends on cosmetics vs function
I put Fabspeed headers with the silver ceramic coating on them just over a year and 4,000 miles ago. They still look brand new. Not sure if the desert southwest climate has anything to do with the lack of rust issue.
I did my Fabspeed's in a grey color ceramic, still look great after 5+ years. As new they were gorgeous shiny metallic, now they're a more oxidized dull grey but uniform in color. Here's a link to what they looked like new from my DIY engine out thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/137604464-post80.html
Thinking Swain was the answer. I got this back today after asking about pricing & chrome removal requirements:
You can use white lightening and then spray another coat of your visual preference over it. I plan on going with Swaintech as well
My coated Fabspeed headers. Fabspeed currently uses a ceramic coating shop in Connecticut (I have the name if anyone wants to know). They coat the inside with the dull heat-resistant stuff, and also add a light aluminium-look glossy coating on the outside. The latter is probably more for appearance and rust protection than for thermal insulation. I like the appearance. It tones down the hot-rodder chrome look. [QUO TE=group77racing;143439220][/QUOTE] I see that you are not running any. Do you have any issues with CEL/SDL?
White headers do look fantastic. My headers are coated with the maximum insulating 2000 degree coating in flat black. Over time I've noticed a little minor declamation of the coating just past the collector...so I spray painted (touch up) the areas with VHT black ceramic header paint (also 2000 degree rating) and all looks great with no further issues. I wonder if is possible to spray over the original black ceramic coating with white 2000 degree ceramic coating. The base black coat is mat so adhesion should not be a problem. If this worked you could have the best (most insulating) coating and the white finish.
I would like the name of the shop if you do not mind. My headers come off next week and I am trill torn between Swain vs Jet Hot and white versus black. That silver looks very nice as well. Gah.
