My alternator is bad and is not charging the battery. Have to have the alternator replaced. There is a brand new battery in the car and fully charged. How far can I drive my 348 with all systems off in daylight. Want to learn if I should have the car towed or whether I can drive to the shop to have the alternator replaced. Also does anyone know what kind the original alternator was. Thanks for your help.

That depends on how far the shop is. Is it only a few miles and without traffic, or is it 30miles away through city streets ect.

maybe keep a charged booster pack handy in case you go for it and the battery gets weak?

Maybe the better question is how long can I drive it. 10 minutes? 30 minutes? 45 minutes or longer? Anyone have any idea and also the type of alternator?

10-14 min I would say not much longer

When the voltage drops below a set point the ecu shut down

Higher the rpm the more juice the ECU will use so drive at low rpms

Until the battery doesn't have enough juice. No real way to say until you drive it and tell us how far you made it..

I made it from Albequerqe to Denver with 2 stops to recharge the battery for an hour in 2012 with my 1995 F355.

I can vouch for 3 miles with a brand new battery fitted just to get me home (whatever level of charge that would typically come with?). I did this about 8 yrs ago when my ac delco alternator decided enough was enough (1991 348 ts).

Does a dash light (battery) show up when the alternator is starting to fail or does this usually come as a surprise with gradual symptoms of a slow turnover, etc...?
