As Porsche said about Hot Lap mode "As the name indicates, Hot Lap mode is only suited to brief runs for top times" do you understand that? Hot lap can easily use in a straight line race like that fake autocar test without any problem (as the name indicate that it is Hot LAP, LAP means it can used for TOP Times records! and about the mclaren's driver and SS deference in straight line races, If the Porsche driver was there then the car was in Hot Lap mode (in the SS test the 918 tested was even without LC)

    Cka,
HL isnt a single shot wonder, its a function of the car.
At a drag event on a 2 mile run, you use it all day long, if you know how.
You can gain almost all the lost power, only at your way back to the start/finish for example...

If the 918 were to run on a hot lap mode and clock a time, if the run is repeated say immediately, will it be able to clock the same time?

Probably yes. Depends on the battery power left.

No, not at all. You've made a wrong claim because the driver in the P1 was Matt Saunders and not a McLaren test driver. He's quite a bit chubbier than SS too, which is disadvantageous to the P1. Any more excuses? :)

If memory serves me well, Dario Benuzzi was behind the wheel and he demonstrated that the car matched the factory's claims.

I haven't decided yet whether you really don't get it or you are just arguing for the sake of arguing. The 918 is clearly not sold out yet, thus it needs all the press it can get. As far as the McLaren in concerned, I reckon that it is down to the connection that Autocar have with the company. As Sutcliffe said, the LaFerrari would have acquited itself very well, should the company have bothered to send an example.

PS: Your statement about FIAT wishing Ferrari to become the Italian Porsche made me laugh out loud. So if you were an Agnelli you would like to see your crown jewel supercar manufacturer to be come an SUV maker. This is hillarious! Fortunately, the Italians are not that demented...

Steve's response to all the doubters:

"Need to put you straight on a few things here folks. The data published was recorded on separate individual runs – and we did that because a) we don’t have three sets of data logging equipment, and more to the point b) it’s safer and more accurate to record the runs individually, without any camera gear attached, because occasionally our test gear can, and does, fall off, especially at very high speeds. The 918 was in hot laps mode when these times were being recorded, the McLaren was in track mode, not race mode – because in race mode the rear wing is fully deployed and therefore creates too much drag above 150mph. The 918’s wing on the other hand can’t be kept in manually at high speed but instead chooses to do whatever it needs to do to keep the car stable. And that’s one of the reasons why the 918 struggled to keep up above 160mph. The other is that its electrically powered front axe also stops contributing above about 165mph, so in theory it loses well over 100bhp at that point. The bike was in whatever launch mode its rider felt was quickest having done several practice starts. Both the cars were in full launch control mode when being figured. And then we started filming with all three together, without the go-pros filming the speedos but with the bike rider carrying a camera on his back. We tried very hard indeed to make the filming representative of the recorded data, but sometimes it’s quite difficult to achieve that with total precision when filming at 170mph and beyond! In the end, we were actually pretty chuffed with the result, both in terms of the data generated and the video edit. I’ll write a blog next week that explains the full data we recorded on all three in more detail – because for those who are interested in such things, there’s some quite good stuff in there. Hope that clears a few things up. Cheers for watching, Steve.

Whoops IME when you lift on the P1s throttle there is some negative torque (or whatver you want to call it) can be felt, and it may be moreso as you change up through the modes. I'm not 100% sure on that last point because I only drove in race mode, but that is what I gather from reading and old chart. But when you lift the car slowed down a bit more that one would normally expect (certainly doesn't 'sail' which I find quite irritating) . Its very gear/speed (mode?) dependent so in the higher gears i sensed more harvesting going on than in the lower gears I didn't notice much if anything.

Overall it was a very consistent feel at all speeds so there was probably some fancy sw work going on to make it all happen smoothly.

The factory held two press events for the Enzo @ Fiorano. One was a large introduction in July 2002 when many journalists were invited to drive the car for a VERY short time on track. They were also given a ride around the track by one of several test drivers, Benuzzi included.

The next event was much smaller and held in March 2003. The objective was to let a few publications gather data from two different late development Enzos. Although Ferrari did produce a set of numbers, the journalists invited were allowed to do their own testing and use their own equipment.

I said i was told the same and posted it earlier.

Not sure why people so touchy about the outcome we did few runs and the outcome almost matchs Autocar yet frome a roll the P1 shined even more.

But who cares just buy what you favor and suits your driving style and needs.

And that's why Ferrari said something to the tune of not getting a customer car either? If they couldn't be bothered, surely they wouldn't mind if AC said, "Hey, no worries, we already have one here. No need to send one."

Do you think Fiat and its shareholders give a **** about Ferrari's status as a crown jewel? The only real measure of the success of an automaker is money. Do you think Ferrari wouldn't rather be making $3B than $400M?

They already took the crown jewel and release two cars that are anything but what the brand is known for -- the California and FF. Bentley SUV is coming up, Lamborghini probably not long after. Ferrari will follow suit as well.

Anyway, we'll let Ferrari prove you wrong in the next month or so when the 458SS gets tested. There are only 499 and they are guaranteed to be sold out. If any magazine tests the performance of it, you're argument is proved wrong. Ferrari wouldn't bother sending or letting them test the 458SS using your logic of them all being spoken for. I'm pretty sure they also proved you wrong by letting people test the 599 GTO which was also sold out.

Ferrari accounts for a not insubstantial 12% of FCA's total profits on just 0.16% of total FCA unit sales. That's the value of brand exclusivity and Sergio Marchionne understands this:

Ferrari Vows Not to Build an SUV or Sedan, Increase Production

Doubtless there are people within FCA that share your viewpoint about earnings (the Chrysler boys maybe) but thankfully Fiat is in charge and Italians (not just Fiat) are rightly proud of Ferrari and do regard it as a crown jewel of sorts.

So at what speed does P1's e-motor decouple?

Btw wouldn't it have been good journalism telling about the wing popping up on the 918 which is what made the difference?

I prefer a car that could go from max speed drag racing to track records without having to change mode. Otherwise it's kinda cheating, like the Veyron's top speed mode.

LOL! Your comment would be different if Ferrari had done it similar to McLaren and Porsche. :p

If Ferrari made things like the P1, I probably wouldn't have liked Ferrari from the start.
Their phylosophy is quite different. Instead of two modes to come out on top in tests, just build 2 different cars, one for customers, one for journos. Kiddin' ;)

Porsche is fine. Same mode for top speed and track racing, although the hot lap mode and the high battery use means it too can't repeat same laps over and over.

LaFerrari is the purest Imo without all the issues, modes, tricks and gimmicks. The most seamless integration, to just drive, like a distorted Stratocaster in a world of Casio keyboards.

I really get the 918 appeal too but McLaren really doesn't do it for me. Don't like the history, the marketing, the fanboys, the technology, the looks, the chairman, the pretention, the F1, ...

I think Mclarens would be ok if they were half as cheap

Please spare me. So you like a HYBRID Ferrari and not one with different modes for different driving situations? It's not like Ferrari's don't have different modes and settings already... Your argument is complete nonsense and the fact that McLaren and Porsche can do what LaFerrari does, but can also go a step further and let the driver explore a new dimension of their 1 million dollar supercars is a huge plus and had Ferrari adopted similar technology, it would be welcomed by all Ferrari fan-boys. :)

I like LaF the way it is. I believe it is the best executed car among the 3 in terms of the providing the driver the most thrilling driving experience. No doubt it will come close or even exceed the speed of the other two but it's already the runaway winner for sheer visual and aural impact. By all accounts despite having the most power, it's performance is the most accessible as well.

For a halo car, I'd take a screaming ultra responsive NA V12 over a turbo-lagged V8 anytime. I'd take a mechanical diff over a braking, software simulated-LSD anytime. Those are biggies in my book. Race mode ride height and hardness settings look cool at the onset but driven by amateur drivers, I wonder if they are worth the weight, added complication, and expense. Implementing a truly effective, performance-altering, and balanced race car aero and race car suspension on a road-legal chassis is easier said than done. Could turn out to be a gimmick. Lets see the times to find out.

Just my thoughts. P1 fans carry on.
