No. A road-registered 917-30 has been done before though.

Which would you rather own, a 917 or a Mclaren F1?

917 in black for me, thanks

There is a hypercar that hasn't been tested yet and it stands a good chance of being quicker still. Also the 918 is not as fast as the other two at very high speeds. Autocar demonstrated that recently.

An impeccable source told me the McQueen connection was the key and that kinda killed the mood. Not sure about $30 million for one, maybe #023 the Le Mans winner but otherwise that sounds a little steep. And it was only 2000 that these were going for around the 1 - 2 million USD mark so they have climbed a long way in a short period of time. Certainly the most amazing cars, 917 drivers talk about gunning one down the Mulsanne straight in 1970 and the thing would drift (lurch?) from one side of the road to the other in a long barely controllable motion, at well north of 200mph, lap after lap. They certainly did sort out the men from the boys.

Well, 918 faster up to 184mph than Veyron, SS? - It means on a twisty track? ;-)
Or whether it is faster accelerating? I'd like to see that

Yeah. People must have been pretending to be blind to not notice that.
And I am also not very interested in endless p1 vs 918 arguments.
    I'm waiting for LaF.

    cheers,

LaFerrari has been tested at the ring, but they prefer to no published any results,
In my opinion LaFerrari is a faster hyper car than P1 in both track and straight lines,
But the 918 as the Ring Record Holder is the fastest of the three at Tracks and Race Circuits,
AutoCar Test is not a legit one, they are cheater and there for that test drive in straight line is a fake one.

Poor Mclaren claimed the P1 is the king of race tracks , now after 918 records at the ring and other circuits, mclaren claim is about straight line drag races at speeds of 320Km/h and above that!, it is funny to me because they say 918 victories at race circuits is because of its four wheel drive and 4wheel steering etc... This means they agree about the 918 outstanding performance at roads and tracks, and for now mclaren is fighting very hard for straight line drags , honestly with a car like Veyron Super Sport ,there is not any real chances for P1 in this category also.

Don't think that it's fake as a whole. P1 is faster after 300km/h, because 918 wasn't designed for that. P1 either, btw...
But conducted (the test) with a clear result in mind - definitely!
And after the hype (around the test) is over, SS will publish in his blog the extended data, which clearly will show that 918 owns P1 at every real world parameter - 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile, 1 km...

Now, good luck to "fastest car before and after" drivers finding a track with more than 2 mile straight... :)

The only two published times and data for the p1 and 918 on the same day and same conditions (top gear and autocar) both show that the mclaren is actually faster from 60mph onwards. As napolis said - once the flag drops the bull**** stops. It doesn't seem to be the case with the porsche fan boys though

+1. Top speed is just bragging rights at this level. Doesn't mean the 918 is the lesser car.

The Autocar result is as expected given the relative power and weight of the 2 cars.

Not sure you should be citing the TopGear test here to prove that the P1 was faster above 60 mph as the results show otherwise:

    Criteria: P1 918

    0-60: 2.7 2.5 seconds
    0-100: 5.0 5.0 seconds

    0-100-0: 9.5 9.4 seconds
    60-0: 28.9 26.7 meters
    100-0: 76.3 71.1 meters

    30-70: 1.9 1.7 seconds

    Max Speed
    on track: 151.9 153.5 mph

That would leave you with the autocar test conducted in suboptimal conditions.

Interesting so that chassis wasn't #22 in the Movie Le Mans?

For me the one's I'd go for are the Hippy Car and The Rossi Car but both are VERY VERY unlikely to come to market in my life time. That said after acquiring Modulo I've learned that "never" can and does happen. The other Porsche I'd Love to own is Janis's old one.

Agree you %100, The 918 designed to be the KING of the roads and tracks, and if you remember well McLaren's target was also about to making the fastest car at all types of roads and tracks, but BUT 918 beat P1 at Ring as well as other Circuits and then McLaren switched to the +2 Miles straight lines drag races but it is completely opposing to their first target.

From the Le Mans Movie, chassis # 022 is in the collection of Mr Seinfeld, and chassis # 024 Ex(Seppi) the winner of Le Mans at the movie is the car has been pulled off Auction recently,
You can find a lot of accurate info at my Face Book page "Immortal Nineoneseven" and my friend's group 917 The Legend!

So the top gear test shows that the porsche was 0.2 seconds faster to 60mph. And then the same speed to 100mph . Does that not show that the mclaren is 0.2 seconds quicker from 60mph to 100 mph? Am I missing something?

The long tail Hippie car, or the K tail? Not sure they kept the original livery in any case.

Agreed that the Rossi car is spectacular. But I think there was one other 917 that was road registered...

If the other data during that test would corroborate that but in-gear acceleration and max speed on the track show otherwise. The P1 was 0.2 seconds slower between 30 - 70 (not the same as 0 - 60). Also the 918 did record a higher max speed on the same track of 153.9 mph, if P1 is so much faster than the 918 above 60 mph how come it recorded a lower speed? Overall, these are fraction of a second figures that do not prove your claim and if anything illustrate how evenly matched both vehicles are.

Thanks for your reply. i must admit I was suprised by their 30-70 times and it does again show how closely matched they are in a straight line. the autocar video also again shows how close they both are up to 150. And as a mclaren fan I commend Porsche for even being close (which they clearly are). I did find top gears other numbers odd and I can't wait for them to release the lap times. I do wonder if they massaged them a little bit to keep up the suspence of the lap times. If either porsche or mclaren had come out on top of g's pulled AND top trap speed then it would of been clear who had the best lap time. So I hold out hope that they're just keeping us guessing. And as someone with no real world experience of either car I'm in no position to call bullsh*t (unlike some people on here) I still think the mclaren is the quicker car on the same day on the same track and I do believe their ring time in the middle of 6.30 - 6.40. I'm also inclined to believe that the updated porsche will be close to the 6.45 porsche insiders were saying it could do half a year ago. What do I know though. I look forward to the next published results or any videos and I hope the Ferrari turns up and does well as well. Customer cars are getting into the right hands. The bullsh*t will stop at some point surely?

    This is getting funny.

Ferrari announcer a Ring time only once; in a 599XX publicity stunt. The Ring is not their yardstick. Having said that the same thing happened some 10 years ago and when the Enzo and the Carrera GT were independently tested and the home team suffered a defeat by the visitors!

As for Autocar, it is as legit as any other test there is.
