Winter is back soon so it is time to prepare for the winter projects. This year I will keep on focusing on the chassi. Last years camber, toe rake setting has taken me big leaps in terms of lap times, but there seems to little more I can do there right now...

Engine vise, I don't see a desperate need for more power. The tracks I drive is mainly technically challenging with no real benefit of more power at this point.

So one way to go is to start focusing on the dampers and springs. I think have come as far as the standard dampers will take me, so when I got in contact with a forum member that has had a set of 3-way MOTON Motorsport dampers for sale, I saw a nice winter project.

The plan is to make sure they install correctly and then send them of to MOTON in Holland for service/rebuild. I will start with spring rates close to the soft setting of the 430 Challenge cars (180/240 N/mm or 1027/1370) and go from there. I have also managed to get hold of a EDC cancellation kit so that the damper warning lamp wont trigger after removing the original electronically controlled dampers.

Cool. Looking forward to hearing your impressions.

How easy is it to change the damping? I have adjustable coilovers on another car and all you need to do is rotate small knobs located under the hood and in the trunk. Pretty convenient.

Compression high and low is very easy, it is done with the two knobs on the canister. Bump is a little trickier. In front you can reach them on top of the damper shaft after turning the wheels, but in the rear I think I will need to remove the wheel to do it.

Or maybe go and talk to Julian at MOTON in Valkenswaard since you seem to be in Holland ;-)

Awesome! Good luck on your journey. I just got done doing some suspension tweaks on my M3. Nothing like this level...a lot of work; but very rewarding.

As you all write, this should be a great upgrade. But I am still very curious to see what that really means. I know the dampers are the Motorsport/Pro version and that they are valved for a 430 Challenge running slicks. Even though I am putting the "soft" option on the car it will be very interesting to see what that means in terms of comfort ;-) I am mainly using the car for track days but I need to get there and back home too...

Project is slowly moving farward :) Got the dampers back from MOTON in Holland after being rebuilt. Front dampers in place. Took a while to get them mounted without drilling any holes...

    Johan,

What is edc elimination kit? How does it work and are they readily available somewhere for purchase.

Electronic Damper Control (EDC). When removing the original dampers, you will get an error code/indication. The EDC elimination kit simulates the original dampers so you wont get the error indication.

KW sells a kit that you splice on to the EDC-wires. Earlier this EDC kit was only sold as part of the NOVITEC shocks kit (made by KW), but now they seem to be selling it separately, still hard to come by though...

Rear dampers are in too :)
Ride height set to a friendly 100 mm front 115 mm rear and chassi alignment done. First test run was a big surprise. 1028 lbs in front and 1370 lbs at the rear and the impression is smoother and softer ride compared to the original setup.

This is consistent with what other with similar installations have said but, I wasn't really prepared for it.

Damper setting is something I will have to play with in the spring so the baseline is what Julian at MOTON in Holland told me. 7 clicks rebound, 5 clicks mid range bump and 3 clicks low speed bump.

Am I right in assuming that the "Schumi button" will not work anymore?

I like your project Johan, I'm very interested in getting your track experiences.

That is correct, no more Schumi button. But from what I can tell, the suspension feels more like the Schumi setting than race even though the springs are 100% stiffer. The sensation is really strange, it is like having both settings at the same time...

Very interesting! (I'm a "Schumi button" driver...)
I'm also curious if this setup will finally lead to better lap times, what I expect.

The Schummi setting is very nice on the road but on track it way too soft. Even the standard race setting is too soft, making the car ride its bumstop in heavy load corners. This is why I am putting stiffer springs in. I find the Schummi setting to be best on twisty roads with rough and bumpy asphalt.

Can you make a comparison between these motons and the Ohlins you had on your 355?
