I have a 1985 308 GTSI QV and recently had the a/c compressor replaced and the clutch rebuilt. It has been some time since I had the a/c working. Are all 3 vents on the dash suppose to have cold air coming out of them? Only the middle one has cold air coming out of it and the other two have nothing. Just checking to see if that is correct. Any advise would be appreciated.

That is correct. Only the middle vent supplies cold air. The other two have flaps on them that are supposed the stop the cold air from back flowing into them but often they are missing.

The AC should also come out from the lower center dash vents.

    Wow

That sucks (or doesn't quite blows) :)

I am only speaking from experience with a 328 AC unit but I need all three vents going to feel any difference.

The rectangular vents below are near useless (except for cooling your knees) and need a redesign.

I know what you mean, I could use all 3 vents with black car and black interior it does get warm inside, but much better with the new compressor!

Pat: I upgraded to Retro air AC with a Sanden compressor and much higher flow interior fan plus I upgrade the condensor fans, all sum to be a BIG difference from stock in my '84 308 Euro. Now I often turn the interior fan down. In Florida sun I also use a fitted windshield cover when the car sits outside and a light colored dash cover that I sometimes leave in place when driving from Auto Anything, both cheap and effective. Also added a louvered panel under the battery from SR in Boulder, not cheap and effectiveness not yet tested. Also, I have small vent holes in the sides of my lower center vents that direct cool air to my feet, I do not know if that is standard??

    Hey Rich,

Do you happen to know the model/make interior fan (blower) that you used as an upgrade?

    Thanks

All three of the windshield vents pass cold air on my '89 328. The center one is the strongest but the other two blow cold air at maybe 1/3 the volume. Perhaps they aren't supposed to but it works reasonably well. It provides better distribution than just the center vent could. Maybe some gasket/seal that's supposed to keep cold air restricted to the center vent is not functioning or maybe the '89 328 is different from earlier cars. In any case, it works reasonably well with all three vents providing cold air that can be directed to different areas of the cabin.

The new blower motor came with the Retro Air kit so check with them for availabitly, call Rock at (800) 840-6162 and please tell him I suggested you call. You do have to do some fitting.

The Retro Air system, I believe, finally makes R134 work in a 308 like R12 does.

I messed around with one in Atlanta that had it last spring. Didn't feel too bad

    :)

R134 will freeze your ass off in a system designed for it to begin with.
