but sad to read all around where things are headed for all the auto manufacturers. it's something we're all going to have to learn to accept. The world is changing, attitudes are changing, regulations are changing and that F1 sound that we all grew up loving and rumbling at the circuit is now but a distant, distant memory.

Somebody before me said their e92 m3 sounded more epic than the 458.... I owned both and in many respects that is a fair statement.
But if u don't mind aftermarket, the 458 can sound even better....certain someone in Encino has THE setup!

You know what, don't try to do things that would void the warranty, because when something has problem, it will cost a fortune to repair. Some more there are not so many workshop know how to deal with this car, so you would end-up like a cattle going into machine, without the warranty.
When I first got my car, I didn't know how to maximize the sound. After sometimes, I managed to. Why don't you try a different driving style. In order to maximize the screaming, try not to floor the pedal right away, but slowly up until 7,000-9,000 rpm then upshift. And when downshift, try to flap the paddle very fast while braking. If you do this at 6,000-7,000 rpm, it should sound like a gunshot.
Fyi, I'm very obsessed in the sound, much more than the speed.

 

He's an idiot, that's contrary to federal law, and dealer/FNA has to show DIRECT causality of issues if any.
Dealers variously sell exhausts. etc.

If your dealer is too stupid to know the law, I'd not rely on them for much.

OK, even in Singapore, Ferrari won't try that. Exhaust won't void a warranty. It's passive. Stay away from the O2 sensors and primary cats, and you're fine. I've really only had V12's, and have replaced many exhausts and secondary cats without issue. I hate droning, and like quiet in neighborhood. Speciale not broken in yet, so time will tell.

 

I'm also very disappointed with the Sound of my Spec. I have about 4500 km done and it improved a little bit in low range but mid range is still a vacuum cleaner, nothing compared to my previous 2011 Italia. I also decided to not go for any aftermarket solution (warranty Issue). I've heard a Car with 100 Sport Cats and Sound was much better. I'm going to install the 458 Challenge Sport Cats so it is a Genuine Ferrari Part and will be installed by the Dealer. I hope this will avoid any Warranty Issue.

100 cell sport cats will trigger a CEL. 200 generally won't. The dealer can reset a CEL, but with 100 cell cats it will come back on following every start. Surprised the dealer is willing to confirm no warranty issues with 100 cell cats, when they won't confirm it's fine with a back box (which it is anywhere in EU and U.S.).

 

Thanks for that. Just asked my dealer about installing challenge cats. Maybe combined with a back box there is a solution.

 

Interested to know how they respond, and if they tell you the part no for the challenge cats. I haven't seen the spec of those, but even racing cars (in EU) have to comply with certain emissions laws.

 

Right, 100 cell sport cats will trigger a cel. FWIW I also get a cel with my 200 cell cats because i run the car on 100 aki octane fuel (105 ron).
For the moment I am using a portable obd II reader that i plug in the obd port to keep the cel light off but I have to erase the code at every start as the light comes back on w/o the reader erasing it.

But who cares about that tho when you have that SOUND

 

105 Ron will make no performance difference to a Stock 458 as its mapped for a max of 95 Ron. If 105 Ron makes an objective noise difference, great stuff.

Sorry, but they are wrong. The 458 engine can only advance ignition to a state to take advantage of 95 RON. F12 can take advantage of 98 RON. There may be other additives doing something, but the knock control sensor maxes ignition advance out at 95 RON's knock point.

 

What is the installed cost of the Novitec mufflers on a Speciale in the U.S?

 

261686 (right) and 261687 (left) are the part no's for the 458 italia/spider/speciale cats.
272122 (right) and 272123 (left) are the part no's for the challenge cats.

The cell count isn't detailed in the tech manual.

The italia/spider (260103 and 263065) use different muffler boxes to the speciale (301227 and 301228) which are different to the challenge (269961 and 269962).

 

the lesson probably is if you don't like it, sell it, whilst you still can at a premium for somebody else to have a reality check in of the crap Speciale sound

 

I just drove my Speciale today and I think its just right in terms of sound. I took it into the tunnel and blasted it! I'm sure it was loud enough to scare more than a few people. In fact, my 430 spider was a bit TOO loud for my taste cuz it hurts my ears - especially in the tunnels.

 

It's not because 430 is louder than 458, but more because when roof is opened, you could hear the sound of the car like a bystander. The sound is coming from the back. Even if you roll down all the windows in coupe, it still far compared to the sound of the roof opened in spider.

 

Pretty much yes. If anything, it'll most likely make less power as it burns slower, hence the pops and crackles.

I agree that spider's are inherently louder due to zero insulation with the top down. But the 430 can reach a higher pitch/frequency and that directly translates to louder for the human ear because we are more sensitive to high pitches.
The Speciale's howl is definitely lower frequency/pitch and this is due to the extremely high compression ration of the engine and also direct injection. It's still loud, but lower frequency. You sorta feel it more in addition to the hearing part.

 

The sound architect configuration of 355, 430, 599 are really different with 458. the correlation between the engine and transmission is well synchronized in every car they built. 458 is Dual Clutch Transmission while other older models are still F1 transmission therefore the sound of the exhaust are just can't be compared in tone frequency.
In regards to stock tone, the F1 transmission will be mostly higher pitch even in the lower RPM compare to the 458 which has DCT will start to scream above 7000RPM. Oh well… this is what based on my assumption experience.

For the higher compression engine like 599 GTO and 458 Speciale eventually should be more higher pitch than the regular 599 GTB and 458 Italia, if not I wonder why….
