Hamilton admitted yesterday that his main focus is, of course, coming out on top of his intense battle for the world championship crown with Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg, but said of the British record: “I don’t really think about that one as much, just because I want to win the championship. Perhaps at the end of the year I will be able to look back and really think about it. But I want to win the world championship. That’s the most important thing.

Damn you toil, lucky for you its a slow Friday for me so i have plenty of time to copy and paste. See below.

Sir Jackie Stewart, who had added some rocket fuel to the conspiracy theory on Sunday, sounded less than gracious when asked about Hamilton passing his tally of 27 grand prix victories. “How many grands prix has he raced in?” he said. “Clearly there are more races run today than when Nigel [Mansell, the leading British driver with 31 victories] or I was racing. It’s the batting average that really counts.”

Stewart had 99 starts while Hamilton has made 142. Stewart also seemed reluctant to welcome Hamilton to the pantheon of the truly great drivers. “He was created by McLaren, which at that time had one of the most successful teams in the world. As a young driver he had a wonderful position from the beginning. And then he’s joined Mercedes-Benz, again one of the most powerful and influential names in the history of motorsport. And he’s a very competent driver.

“The combination of a good car and a good driver is tough to beat. I think he’s earned it. He’s still only in his late 20s. I retired when I was 34. Michael Schumacher was in his 40s when he retired. So there’s a long future ahead of him. So he’ll accumulate a lot more victories because he’s a desirable driver for any team to have, particularly a multi-national.”

I was ready to defend you but then I read this and realized you don't need it. You have a way of making Aircon and crew look very silly indeed.

Good find with the quotes there! Funny how they try and play down his success. Gracious as always.

Point about Ham having an advantage because he started f1 in a good team; he had to work hard to get that seat by dominating all the feeder series. In the old days the drivers could, comparatively speaking, walk into f1 (exaggerating but compared to today it was very different). Thus had ham had the opportunity to skip all the feeder series and jump into f1 at say 17 (not a ludicrous proposition given vertappen) and amass some points in an average team and then move up to mclaren his career statistics would be even more impressive. Therefore far too simplistic to say he had an advantage starting in a good team. I would argue the opposite - having to work so hard to get into f1 when he could've started earlier means his stats look less impressive than those who walked into f1 without having to really prove themselves first (someone will probably jump on this but I'm using all terms lightly so no need to nitpick)

Point about batting average; as discussed earlier, in the years that Stewart scored most of his wins he was in a good car AND had a team mate who was either unable/would not challenge him for wins.

Stewart didn't mention how for most of hams career he's had a wdc for team mate/ very competent driver. So of course that will effect the batting average. Not everyone gets partnered with a Maldonado-Esque figure to make them look better than they are ;)

And Mansell has competed in more races than Hamilton already. Mac was a pile of sht for half the time ham was in it. And ham has another decade or so of his career left.

Those old chaps aren't very gracious are they

Yes...but I'm trying to look silly on purpose. You, on the other hand, are trying to be serious but are treated as a joke. You try to look clever, but you can't. Fail!

So, I'm achieving what I set out to do intentionally, but you don't even realise what a joke you've become to anyone but the most diehard, one eyed lewis fans.

    And.....both matters are hilarious.

You probably picture me being mad at my end of the keyboard (phone). But I'm actually laughing and enjoying myself most of the time (aside from a few moments during the race if something bs happens). Just the way I write makes it seem like I'm serious. Though I am serious in the sense that I believe what I say (aside from a few inflammatory comments I throw in for good measure - see my Maldonado one above)

I've made a new mathematical formula:

In order to ascertain silliness of thread: airconposts/number of pages = if >1 then thread has been intellectually devalued. If <1 then there is still some hope. Works errytime ;)

What is your obsession with teammates? He had to race against 20 other people and lost to some of them. It wasn't a 1 on 1 battle.

That he did. General point is that the more dominant your car the more important your team mate becomes. If he's sht then you've been gifted an entire season of wins (in case of a really dominant car). If he's good then he will take half or more off you.

Meaning Stewart shouldn't keep trumpeting on about his average when in all his championship years his team mates didn't win a single race (iirc from last time I viewed the stats but don't quote me on it). A veritable gift!

So you're taking all the credit for Toils supposedly apparent lunacy ermm.

Personally I believed everyone was entitled to an opinion on here, of course that being said, as long they were not personally offending said persons, maybe I'm wrong.

I think it is rather funny that you start to play down the success of Jackie Stewart to get your point...Obviously you are talking about a time you never really looked into by now.
As you said, things were very different back then...Whereas young drivers like Hamilton or Verstappen are prepared from early years to get into racing by managers and personal sponsors or a mentor the "profession" race driver was barely existing back then. When you listen to most of the old drivers they were not just not supported by their parents, some even had to keep a secret on their racing activities. Don´t forget that the lifespan of a driver was far shorter than today so there were not many parents happy to see their sons racing. Some had talent and got a car to drive from someone but many bought used touring cars or sports cars from borrowed money to make their experience and show their abilities. Wheras Hamilton (and others of this generation) never had to worry about something different than racing this was just a part of the life of the "becomming racers" back then, many even had to earn money aside to get their living. So I would not call this "walking into F1", they had to show talent in minor series as well (and they drove everything from single seaters, touring cars to sports cars) to get a seat in the top teams as well.

Furthermore they were racing against dead and unreliability in every single race. You complain when Hamiltons car does not finish but have you ever looked in the old racing results when normally barely more than half of the cars made it to the finish line, when some of them literally fell apart as they were mounted in barns rather than modern factories with quality management?

They come from a different era and they made more and worse experiences in their racing careers. You say they should not play down the success of Hamilton, I (and obviously not few others here as well) say you should not take away credit from them (without having a clue about racing back then) just to make your idol look better...
