Time to change topic, finished my full rebuild of a turbo 12HT diesel over the winter months, something to keep me occupied? I know its no Ferrari engine but it was complicated enough for me with the mechanical tools I had to hand. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

This was last week, full testing will start this weekend. Galvanised chassis, coil springs around, alloy shocks, 4 wheel disc brakes, front & rear E-lockers, fibreglass body. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Though it's probably the wrong thread(miscellaneous perhaps),is this a completely fabricated vehicle,or based on an FJ40/45? Do you intend to get it registered?
Chassis started as a FJ40, then 80 series coil suspension added front & rear, wheel base extended, fibreglass tub specially made to FJ43 length (no FJ43's came to Australia), diesel 12ht turbo added, 4 wheel disc brakes added, 5 speed added, chassis & roll cage and all other components that could be galvanised were, 3" 316 stainless steel exhaust, e-lockers, 33" tyres on alloy wheels, build started mid 2009, 5 year build, registered. Thought is was the right thread, drank a lot of beer during this build?
That is very nice! Looks like a small fortune spent! Looks like you're quite handy on the tools Robert. Love the cheeky wheel shot of the California in one of those pics also.
Thanks, I did some on the minor assembly on the engine at the home garage before taking it up to the beach house. I am in the process of building a second one for Max, the 12ht engine is half finished and the extended FJ43 tub will be ready in March. I have to build a second unit as he has already asked to take it next weekend and I only just finished it? Max bought a new Jeep to come up to the beach house as there is no road and now wants to swap it for the 40 and leave me the jeep to go fishing in?
Great fabrication using all the best bits Toyota put out. Standard Toyo box?,they can be a pain, dropping out under deceleration when they get a bit of milage under them...I suspect, though, that yours would have been rebuilt. ...Oh,the swivel hubs are another pain in the arse,as you possibly know. Looks like it would be a great deal of fun. Beer is a great help on most of the threads in Aussie....
Yeah, rebuilt the 5 speed box with beefed up 5th gear, also added disc hand brake. But too much beer made me mate the 5 speed to the 12Ht engine but forgot the clutch fork? was not a very happy chappy that day? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Lol! Good old Max! Pass on my best wishes to him again please mate. Sounds like you boys have the life. Lol lol lol! I did similar to my bro inlaws WRX. Put a new gearbox in it, clutch is a pull type clutch. The TO bearing was in back to front when it arrived from Melbourne, I didn't pay attention to it. I put the new box in and hooked up everything underneath. Was all done. Lowered it down off the hoist to connect the starter motor, slave cylinder and fit the top intercooler after I filled it with oil. Couldn't work out why the cluch fork felt like **** and had no resistance. Eventually worked out the TO bearing was back to front and it wasn't 'pressing' into the pressure plate! Gearbox back out again. That was a day in my life I am never going to get back.
That story makes me feel so much better. I have wasted many such days... When I rebuilt the carbs on the Daytona, I started by fitting the front carby, then the 2nd and so on. Until I got to the 6th and the studs were inaccessible. I realised I should have started from the back. All 5 off again, then repeat process starting from the back. Go to connect accelerator linkage and, WTF, nothing lines up. That's when I notice that each carb has a little number stamped on it, from 1 to 6. I had fitted them out of order. So all off and start again. What should have a been a 2 hour job took all day .
Sounds like something I would do Except I would throw a wobbly half way through and send it to someone who knew what they were doing. Then 2 yrs later I would get the car back.
Ferrari workshop manual for Daytona: Carburettor servicing. 1. remove carburettors 2. replace seals, reset float levels, etc 3. refit carburettors I summarised step 2, but the 1 and 3 are word for word.
Trying to take the starter motor off my old 1750GTV,my Alfa mechanic mate says I need to take the carbys and brace off...naaaah Klink knows better....3 hours later, with the carbys off.........
Changing leads on the bambino, first call to mechanic is "Which is number 1 cylinder" to which he replies "back one". 2nd call to mechanic is "You mean back of car or back of engine?" Doh!
