Last weekend I tripped over the strap of one of a collection 35mm cameras I was cleaning on the kitchen floor & fractured 2 ribs. I thought I’d be fine in a couple days. Docs said today it would be weeks. Gave me Ultram. Broken ribs anyone? It hurts to breathe. Any tips to make this less miserable?

    I forgot one

It's really better if you can avoid breathing.

Every time you do something that hurts you'll react by taking a big breath and well...you know. Then if you have some type of warped sense of humor that will make you laugh.

It's just a bad situation. I highly suggest just not breaking the ribs in the first place.

Get someone to pick up the cameras so it doesn't happen again.

Did this a few years back skiing, couldn't roll over sleeping for a month. Was given ultrams as well. They didn't do much for the pain but they would relax you. When you stop taking them you need to taper down instead of just stopping otherwise you get night sweats and no sleep for a few days. Have broken a few bones over the years and ribs were by far the most painful, good luck.

    Don't sneeze. Don't take a crap.

    Everything is miserable.

Only alternative is an NFL style cortisone injection.....

    Good luck,

You can try wrapping them. It may help.

I've had several over my athletic career.

I have broken 18 ribs over the years, mostly on the sides but once at the sternum and once at my back. The first time, it's terrible. Then you get used to it. I won a pro colorado state cycling championship in 2008 6 days after breaking 3 ribs. I certainly breathed a lot to win that race.

Don't take anything as it slows the healing.

    Sorry to hear Venus.

Like Sherpa I've also done this many times. I had over a decade of racing motocross with my kids and had a ball but did do my ribs in a few times........at 40+ at the time the first occasion I thought I was out of the woods (two weeks) and was unloading the kids bikes from the trailer and jumped down the 18" height of the trailer only to have the sharp pain again.....here we go.

Twice it happened mid summer and I just could not sit around....we were at the lake and went for a boat ride (not a good idea on rough waters with broken ribs) but when I put my life jacket on (and cinched it up tight) I had to sneeze (as others have pointed out, not a good idea and you will avoid at all costs after doing it the first time) I did sneeze and it did not hurt that much.

Bing......I had an idea.....I had to groom our track so I went out and bought the best life jacket I could find (five broad non expanding straps). I was able to do all of the bobcat and dozer work with minimal pain....and yes it seems to get easier each time you break a rib (not encouraged!). Putting that life jacket on allowed me to spend the summer with the kids!

Nsaids (anti-inflammatory) are not encouraged, they do slow bone healing.

    Get better.
The tight fit of the jacket did not allow expansion of my chest and

Oh damn, this thread was fairly timely.

Have a rib on my left side that has been an issue on and off since high school.

Yesterday, carrying a large box out of the shop, I managed to catch it on the door knob, which drove the nice pointy corner straight into my ribs.

Not really worth going to see if I actually "broke" it this time, but it sure hurts at least as much as it ever has before. About screamed rolling over in bed. Doing my best not to cough or sneeze today.

Hope Venusone is healing up well!
