F360 Coolant leaked

Hello everyone new here! Crappy intro but my name is John and im a owner of a 01' 360 spider for about a week now and it already is broken ok so started off with i got a CEL didnt really think much of it so on my way home the car made a snap noise and coolant started leaking. Made it home safely. Got home checked the belts and what a nightmare i saw! The two main belts were snapped because the alternator seized up. Just took the alternator out but still am not 100% why almost all the coolant ended up underneath the car. Ran the CEL and P1126 came up. If anyone has any advice please thank you.

 

Did it cause the water pump to seize or did the broken belt cause the hose to split? Here is code P1126 -- not really related unless something in that system got wet from coolant.

List of codes attached. P1126 does not appear to have anything directly to do with your problem. Question would be whether the alternator failed and belts caused the leak (water pump seal, hose) or there was a plenum hose or heat exchanger failure that trashed the alternator and it cascaded from there. A pro looking at it would be a good idea and he could also make sure no cross contamination of the transaxle oil and coolant.

Well coolant is under the car because with no belts it probably got too hot and puked out some coolant.

The CEL on a recently purchased car is quite common. Sellers turn out the light, you buy it and 50 or 100 miles later it resets the light. Can be tested for though during a good PPI.


Really curious why the alternator seized. Not something they usually do unless the shop servicing it has been adjusting the belts too tight and destroyed the bearings. Electronically the alternators are rather fragile but not mechanically.

 

First thing I thought. "Freshly serviced car!"

OP, time to get it to a shop and do the look over. Belt snapping could be overheating... you also have a coolant line below the access panel behind the seats. if that hose dislodged.. you have alot of coolant flowing out. Access panel off and inspect things now. I'd personally chekc hoses at engine, behind front trunk at at radiators... if blowout...

You'll get it figured out and will be having alot of fun in no time.

 

Brian- Sounds more logical. Would bet nobody used a tensiometer on the aux belts. Are the frequency numbers in the WSM good?

 

Thanks for all the responses everyone excited and worried to be a part of the fam! Lol . The CEL ur right doesnt seem to be related. Dropping the car off tomorrow morning. Was quoted 450$ for replacing the belts about 1,000$
For alternator. Hopefully the headgasket is okay which is all im worried about! I tried looking this up as well...no one else has heard of a alternator seizing like

No. The alt # is too low. They changed it for CS.

Thanks for responses everyone. Dropped it off at the dealer. The alternator bearing seized up and snapped the belts causing coolant to leak from the reservoir due to overheating. New belts and rebuilt alternator along with oil and coolant! Happy again time to

Ok, so should I be using all the CS #'s or those in the wsm?

I hate making any belt tighter than really needed. I have never seen a reason to make the A/C or P/S belt tighter than the 360 spec but for the alt belt is was obviously to low. I have been using the CS spec since before there was a CS. However what is shown in the above chart I have never seen before. Every Ferrari document I have shows the 360 PS belt at 216. 100 is absurd.

 

Where did you get that 360 chart? I have never seen it before and it is wrong.

 

Brian, Steve copied the #'s directly from the Ferrari workshop manual. Mine gives the same. Funny I found this thread because while installing my belts yesterday, I couldn't believe the 100Hz. At 100 I was able to pretty easily spin the ps pulleys under the belt by hand while holding the belt stationary. Just didn't seem legit so I stopped and checked here. Steve how's your 306 holding up with the WSM #'s? So... Brian would you share the #'s for all of em?

 

Which manual? The printed paper one? If so even Ferrari told us not to use that book because it had so much bad information. That book was good for a lot of laughs it was so bad.

 

Brian- I just looked and that is indeed the numbers quoted in the early 360 Modena/Spider WSM that was pretty much a copy of the first 360 WSM plus details on the top. 1999/05.

That is why I asked the question since that is all most owners have for data.

 

I didn't know that is what was on All Ferrari. Too bad. Lots of bad info there. He should take it down.

See if you can get an unencrypted late 360 or Spyder disc. Or get the dongle and use the encrypted version.

- I posted the belt specs to highlight the variance in the P/S number (and hopefully generate some civil discussion)

- If my calculations are correct, going from 100 Hz to 217 Hz corresponds (roughly speaking) to a five-fold increase in belt tension, if everything else is the same. [1]

- As mentioned (a while ago), there are many errors in the referenced FWM document. I noticed it mostly while using the electrical diagrams; others have noted things like bolt specs being way off.

- If YOU have adjusted the tension on a 360 P/S belt, or directly observed a pro doing the same, please share with us the frequency spec used.

And this for higher tension T=4M L^2 F^2

And

To have a ratio T/t

(4M L^2 F^2)/(4m l^2 f^2)

And since everything is constant except frequency we get the ratio as:

F^2)/f^2

Or in this case
217^2/100^2

Giving 4.7 or 217hz is 4.7 times more tension than 100hz
