I've just sold my Vetroresina for a lot more than the silverstone auctions car. It never hit the market

Good cars many times don't need to hit the market. If an owner, who knows they have a properly good car, approaches a few key market players, who equally can quickly appreciate a good car, the car will shift at a price commensurate with the condition of the car.

I normally don't rant, but I really need some closure and opinions. I DID find the Glass project car I'd mentioned on the last page, and my friend who was going to partner on it went to the Mid West yesterday to inspect it. We agreed on a price with the gentleman, for a car with the engine out, the doors are off, the paint is stripped and it needs a lot of reassembly. I specifically asked the owner if he was going to pass any of his cars down to his son, and he said no, he's not into cars (I asked this question because twice in the past I've had to listen to a sob story after agreeing to purchase). My friend asked him to prep a contract and give him wiring instructions (it was right as banks were closing, and he couldn't find a close by BofA), which he did, with the intention of sending full funds this morning. They shook, and it was a deal!

Skip ahead to today. I get a call from my friend, the owner called, and backed out of the deal, stating he was going to give the 90% disassembled 308 to his son now, his son who wasn't into cars, and not interested in any of his collection (and there were some FANTASTIC cars in his collection). My stomach dropped, and my disappointment has been eating at me all day. My friend says the owner is NOT the type to honor his word, and if given a chance for personal gain, serves himself first with his own interest at hand.

Frankly, I'm extremely angry right now. On the phone, prior to my friend taking the trip out to inspect, the owner was enthusiastic to sell, gave me his price, and we agreed to it, without a penny discount! So, what happened? He called a friend, said "I sold my Vetroresina for X", and his friend said "What? That's to cheap! Undo the deal!"...That's my only scenario I can think makes sense. Waste of time, money and I'm pissed. What are your thoughts? Anyone been down this type of road?

It happens, move on, life's to short to try and figure out why people do the things they do. To me it sounds like you were dealing with a hoarder.

Something better is around the corner for you. Let him and his son figure it out, think of it as a blessing in disguise.

    Agree with the above.

The only reason I sold my car is because I sold and miss a certain car. Very rare it is ( Porsche 964 3.6 turbo RHD only 80 in the world) and I have been trying to buy one for the last year. I agreed a price on 2 and then the next day they want more because somebody else will pay more etc.

I sold my 308 to a guy who had been chatting to me over the last 6 months. Could I have got more? Probably. The 964 I have bought never hit the market. Would it have gotten more, maybe.

There are genuine people out there and loads of messers. Unfortunately you where dealing with a messer.

    Good luck with your search

I will say this, and I appreciate the input and opinions, what we agreed to was 100% what he asked for, I didn't BS him, I didn't complain, I didn't lowball, or anything, so, yes, at the price we were prepared to pay, most of you might throw up if I said it, but it was on HIS terms, not mine.

It's hard to shake this one off, I work for a small company, we buy and restore (usually mechanical, and not 3 years nut and bolt concours cars), and it always stings when you feel you've made a great deal, can bring a car back from the dead, then it all falls apart because someone isn't a man...I will stop complaining at that, just happy to sound off a bit.

    Not all that uncommon.

Given the price hype I'd forgotten just how many vetros they made.
    Not exactly rare at 700+

Well, after three long months, my 76 euro Vetroresina finally arrived! Brief history, I purchased the car out of Europe three months ago, it was transported via covered carrier to customs were it sat for weeks getting inspected, placed on an ocean container ship, arrived into the States where it sat again waiting for customs clearance, before being transported to me via another covered carrier. Lots of time, lots of money to get it here and lots of frustration, however, in the end I have one nice 308 to add to my garage!

It has spent its entire life in Switzerland. It's funny how I acquired it, I thought that I had the glass 308 that was at the Gallery Brummen, I had already agreed on a price and was waiting to hear back on next steps when I was informed that a current long time customer jumped in front of me. Not sure if you remember, it was lowered and had the 16" wheels painted gold. The Gallery did the honourable thing and referred me to a few people in Europe including Will Stone the historic sourcing company as they thought that they had information concerning another one. Seems like a close Ferrari community over there as I heard from several sources almost immediately.

Turns out about a week later I found this one and agreed on a price and I got it. Not the most pleasant experience to be honest, however, I am pleased that I have a euro glass dry sump! It's red with black leather, red carpet too! Looks absolutely amazing!

Here are a few pics along its journey. The first picture was just before the car was placed on the truck bound for customs.

Actually, it's totally uncommon. None of them were made like that.
