Fault code P1154 sorted at last

The car has been at the dealers for 6 weeks this round trying to sort this code.
(4 weeks last time)
After numerous attempts and failures, the fault was a thermal coupler having a hair line crack in it.
They replaced gaskets, a small muffler leak, exhaust leak (suspected), replaced various sensors and did a load of other things to get to the bottom of this. Many hours spent.

Needless to say I am a now, at last a VERY happy 360 owner, so tomorrow I will drive to Auckland and pick her up.

For the total time Iv'e owned this 360 it has always thrown this CEL, so at last!

Graham- Good news. That kind of thing can drive a tech crazy, not to mention the owner.

 

Came on again on the way home. Un bloody believable. Just for fun, it also threw two more extra codes for good measure.

Plugged my scanner in and cleared them. See what happens.

I give up now because the cars goes perfectly.

 

Have you tried cleaning your MAF sensors with CRC Spray MAF Cleaner?

I would try that if I were you. Simple and easy and worthy a try.

I have diagnose quite a few bad MAF's. Never once did cleaning have any effect at all in their measured function.

MAF cleaning is snake oil.

 

Unless that snake oil is from a K&N filter.

Does the car run well? Have you inspected the condition of the spark plugs and if so what do you see?

What are the other codes?

 

Well, I cleaned my MAF's and my CEL went away.

I discovered my MAF thermistors were contaminated with engine bay dressing.

Cleaned my MAF sensor, cleaned my BMC air filters, cleaned all the air intake parts, then reset the fault codes and it has been over a month now and CEL hasnt come back.

If you had not contaminated them they would not need cleaning. I avoid self inflicted wounds.

 

Any K&N makes it as far as my shop it goes in the garbage where it belongs.

 

I did not do it intentionally. The engine bay dressing I used got into the intakes by accident (over spray).

I too avoid self inflicted wounds whenever I can but we all make mistakes as no one is perfect.

You make it sound like you never make a mistake in your life.

 

My race shop showed me why the K&N's flow better... you can see through them and the intakes were full of dirt!! I wouldn't put one in a lawnmower.

 

Gary- Correct, what stops the dirt is the oil on the filter, which then fouls the MAF sensor. A lose, lose because you have your choice of dirt or oil.

 

The oil is good for collecting some of the dirt inside too!

 

Gary- Even better, dirty oil. Or oily dirt.

 

To keep this thread useful. I have K&N due to the fact that they are what is issued with a Gruppe M airbox. The filters seem to work fine. I am very very careful not to over oil them. You can see how much junk they capture when you clean them. You can also see why removing the MAF entirely makes sense when you clean those. If the sensor is dirty perhaps the grates and screens are too. I have cleaned my K&N filters twice in my ownership thus far and the white glove test on the inside of the ducts and grates passed with flying colors. No oil and no dirt.

Over oiling and improper maintenance certainly makes them a lot worse, but unless my eyes are bad I can see the bottom of your wash tub right through the filter (red circle)? The Porsche ones I looked at were definitely see-through but this may not be the case with yours, just an optical illusion..

Oh goodness no! That is a type of epoxy compound where they bonded the metal and cloth filter to the end section.

Good eye though! what color shirt was I wearing?

The fact remains they are a substandard filter compared to paper and their ability to damage a MAF is well documented.

A poor choice for a filter.
