To clean the handles I used a media blaster with fine glass beads that we use to surface aluminum parts. It works quickly and produces a satin like finish. I then painted them with a Rust-O-Leum paint. The color isn't quite right, but I couldn't find the Rust-O-Leum automotive black at the time. I plan to reprint them at some point, but the urgency has gone. They have been on the car for a few months and look great except for the color which is hard to notice. I use my car regularly.

I refinished the seat and door handles but left a light brushed aluminum finish rather than black. The sticky stuff came off very easy with furniture refinisher. I used Old Masters but any brand would work. Compressed air blew out any residue in the corners, nooks and crannies. An abrasive pad on the faces provided the brushed look then clear lacquer. Getting the locking mechanism to function right took some tedious fussing but the project was quite straight forward.

Looks good...So you just left off the window insignia etching?

Don't understand the comment. There was no etching. The little lever in the door handle is the lock.

Sorry I meant to say the door lock has the word "Lock" with an arrow etched into it. I was asking if you just elected to leave that off after you refinished the lock/lever release?

My car is a1999 456M. This may just be a model difference but the lock lever had no markings. It was just sticky black before refinish.

Ok I see. I didn't know the 456s lacked labels on their switches.
