... my little birdy's tweeting, McLaren staffers incensed, no less than a dozen of them are set to hand notice to personnel, walk off the job no sooner than the ink's dry on Alonso's new contract. Planet Woking is not a happy place - asj.

He's the best driver on the grid. Why wouldn't they be ecstatic? :)

The strange thing about all this is:

Alonso wants out of Ferrari and Ferrari are happy enough to let him go, so why should they have to pay him to release him from his contract?

Because they've hired Vettel? - But surely they've only hired Vettel because Alonso wants to go?

It's not quite the same as when Ferrari needed to off-load Kimi to make space for Alonso! Back then, Kimi wasn't looking to get out of Ferrari early, he would have quite happily carried on to see out his contract.

Alonso's been looking to leave Ferrari a long time before the whole Vettel situation came to light (There's absolutely no way Vettel to Ferrari was a long time in the making. As Alonso to McLaren has shown us, F1 just cannot keep that sort of secret to itself! Until Christian Horner "let slip" that Vettel was leaving to drive for Ferrari, nobody had a clue!).

Had Alonso been happy at Ferrari then I seriously doubt that they would have fought the issue and forced him out (I'm sure even Ferrari rate Alonso as a better all round driver than Vettel!).

As I see things, Alonso wants out and Hamilton is not available so Ferrari have chosen option 3: Vettel.

From Vettel's point of view, if he doesn't go to Ferrari now then chances are it will never happen for him, and I think driving for Ferrari is one of the last major things that he wants to achieve before he finishes his career. He probably knows that he's not going to be a regular winner with Ferrari, but the Scuderia is an itch that he just has to scratch. He seems to have a need to be a part of Ferrari's F1 racing history. It's as if driving for Ferrari is the icing on the cake to his 4 WDC's.

With Alonso, I think it's been a similar situation to the one Valentino Rossi found himself in at Ducati - He thought he was going to go to Ferrari and like Schumacher, turn them around and dominate F1. That hasn't happened and so he's given up (possibly helped on his way by the changes being made at Ferrari).

Rossi thought he could match Casey Stoner at Ducati and show the World how great he was, but that didn't work out either. Eventually he had to admit to himself and the World that he couldn't do what Stoner had done (win with Ducati), and had to walk away from the team.

I doubt we'll ever know all the details about Alonso leaving Ferrari and any payments made to him, but it seems to Me that if he wants out and Ferrari are happy/resigned to him going then it shouldn't really cost Ferrari that much for them to part company.

... really bad idea. Indicative of renaming Wimbledon the Kim Philby courts, Fernando Alonso going back to McLaren, this is not (NOT) going to go down well, at all - asj.

This all got going because I think santander was not going to keep funding Fred and with that fiat had to ask marlboro to pay not rent the space out . Marlboro had a list of demands ldm has to stay away for the media about the race team and they wanted a 4 times champ who talks to media not like Fred the team needs to make me a better car or kimi I'm going to the a crap .Marlboro is holding what we call blockers in od8 they got a lot of say in what happens because fiat doesn't want to spend it's own money on the F1 team and they can't find the company with the money to replace marlboro

Says the guy still defending kimi when it's clear that he sucks

Not to go off on a rabbit trail with this, but Kimi remains a phenomenal driver who got stuck in an utter hoopty of s car that doesn't come close to matching up with Kimi's smooth style. Kimi wiped the floor with Grosjean in a car Kimi could actually drive and he is no slouch. Nando had the entire team rotating around his whims and desire which lead to a car only he could drive

Kimi would have also had one or actually two championships at McLaren if the Newey designs weren't so fragile then.

I'm no Kimi fan but ldm hired him back for no good reason . I agree 100 % the car doesn't suit him because of all the under steer built in to . But Kimi doesn't have the mental toughness to push though he has one off all year that says to me he is not push as hard as he can .

LdM signed him because Alonso looked like he walked away and Ferrari needed a #1 driver. Nothing wrong with that decision

There is a huge distinction to be made. Saying kimi was a good driver in the past is fine. But defending his performance in the f14t is just pure idiocy. He has performed the worst for ferrari in any season since 1981 (I think that's what was said). And some of those cars were complete dogs and much worse than the f14t.

And kimi hardly flogged grosjean last year. 2 places ahead in standings. If you wanna see how a real driver performs against grrosjean look at alonso vs grosjean in the renault

Another very "reasonable" drivers comparisation based on a rookie in 2009 that drove 7 races and the same guy 4 years later as an established F1-driver...Now these are hard fact ;)

I was comparing them on the last 7 races only.

And hardly a seasoned f1 driver by 2013; one full season in f1 in 2012 where he dnfed ten times.

No reason why I can't compare the two. A driver gets given an f1 seat because people with far more knowledge than us deem them ready to compete at the highest level. Then some guys on an Internet forum tell me I can't compare a drivers first season simply because it suits their argument.

    Phil,

According to Nigel Roebuck's column in the last issue of "Motorsport Magazine", discussions between Vettel and Ferrari took place during this spring, and a letter of intent between the two parties was signed in June.
This could confirm that the hiring of Kimi in the summer of 2013 was because they already had doubts about a common future with Fernando Alonso at the time.

Another baseless statement. So ironic how you don't realise how stupid you sound. If my reasoning is flawed try and provide a reason. Gl.

AS i've said before, since the Hungarian G.p last year , Alonso got on the wrong foot with Luca and the team...he criticized the team and we all know what happened to a certain "Alain Prost", and then to add insult to injury he tryed to get a place at Red Bull!!. At Monza, Alonso had an outburst during qualifying, asking who was the idiot (or something like that) responsioble for qualifying startegy, and Luca went trough the roof....That day he was going to let massa go and anounce Kimi, but after that he almost changed his mind and almost fired Alonso instead....Massa and his people were awaiting for Luca to have an ansewr, if he was staying or leaving, and Luca was going like crazy without knowing what to do...this was seen by 3 reporters, finaly he decided to keep Alonso and told Massa he would not renew his contract...but it came close to be Massa/Kimi for 2014....Luca always said he wanted Vettel, that he prefered him to Hamilton, so it's no wonder he began talking with him a long time ago.
