* PAINTING the Ferrari 360 key RED *

After giving the one key a "brushed aluminum" look, I decided to paint my other one red. After sandblasting, masking and coating it with a primer, I had it painted in ROSSO Corsa, to match the car's body colour.

As I didn't want to use the metal ring (so as to avoid chipping the paint), I tried with a rubber-like loop first, but it looked very cheapy... And then I made up smth else, which is shown in the last photo.

I did mine some while ago and even though I too used a non-metallic loop it chips from all sorts of contacts. Unless you are absolutely anal about where you place it, it will chip. Even in your pocket it can contact the metal press stud on the fob sleeve. I'm thinking of having mine powder coated. As an alternative I did look for some red Plasti-dip but couldn't find any.

How can you powder coat plastic? Don't think this is possible. I also need to repaint my 430 key, because it has chipped badly, but still thinking which way of spraying will make it last more.

However, this 360 key looks awesome.

 

The 360 key is solid ALUMINUM, not plastic.

 

How do you get the horse off the key? Is it a press fit?

Sorry, didn't know that. All the other Ferrari keys, that I have seen are plastic and that's why I thought this is also the case with the 360 one. However, clear coating is very thick and I'm not sure the finish will be very smooth.

 

Yes, I used a small screwdriver with a thin edge.

 

How I got my keys, chipped and ugly. Are original keys silver/aluminum?

Original keys are made of aluminium and PAINTED silver. But the paint always gets chipped. I had one of my keys stripped from the paint and polished to have a "brushed" and not shiny look, and the other one painted red (above).

 

Your keys look nice. I wonder if a clear polyurethane coating will protect from chipping.

 

Plastidip would come off faster than paint. It's basically a rubber coating that you can rub off with your fingers. If you watch videos of people blacking out their chrome trim, they let the overspray land on the paint and pull it off after it dries.

 

I covered the whole key with paint-stripper and after letting it sit for a few minutes, the horse just comes off easily. If it's still stuck on, just cover the horse with more paint stripper, and let it sit there. It'll come unstuck by itself relatively quickly.

To stop the key from chipping, I used this *waiting for gasps* (or something similiar):
Glasscoat 1060 250ml X2 GLASSCOAT | Epoxy Resin, Varnish, Two Component Epoxy Resin, High Gloss Finish, Clear Timber Filler, Knothole Filler, Scratch Resistant Finish, Embedding Medium, Glass Like Finish, Gloss for Artwork, Epoxy on Artwork, Epoxy on

Once you apply the glasscoat, it's even resistant to paint-stripper. So be aware of that. If for whatever reason you want to repaint, you'll need to sand the resin off to get to the paint underneath. Stick on the horse back on with superglue, after you put on the glasscoat.

As pictured, my key still looks good after a few months since it's been done and has resisted being chipped when put together with a bundle of my other keys in my pocket.


Edit... Slightly out of topic... Here's another use for the glasscoat resin. I got sick of the tired look of the passenger kickpanel rest (or whatever it's called). Ripped it off, and did a CF hydrodip, and the used the same glasscoat on it. It's now resistant to shoes, stillettos, etc.

That's good to know -- I think I'll try that before powder coating. Is it a clear coat that goes over the painted key?

Yes. Prep the key as per usual with paint and let it fully dry/cure, but don't stick on the horse yet. Mix the resin/hardener together thoroughly (it's clear) and with a paint brush, go over all the painted surface. I put on about 4-5 thin layers over a few days (do not apply in thick layers). Do the horse last with superglue, over the dried resin-ed surface.

If unsure, try it out on a piece of metal or something, to get used to the process before using it on the key.

I am taking one of my keys to my auto paint guy to do for me, we will see what he charges and how it comes out.

PO dug them all out.
