Hey guys anyone know what type of paint was used to paint the cars ?? My car is metallic silver. Just wanting to know if it was single stage or a base clear? I'm not even sure if BC/CC was even being used yet in 79. Thanks
Looks mostly correct. The exception would be the adjustable wrench. The belt is also a replacement. Pliers should be Hapewe and the 5 wrenches should either say drop forged or selected special steel or a combination of both. Some tool kits in '79 had the two red tags. I have also seen a red and yellow tag or a single blue tag or single red tag. I have also seen brown tool kit bags for '79.
Good eye...I thought the same thing about the 'adjustable wrench' (it said 'China' on it, knew it was wrong, ). Looked around, have the hapewe pliers and subbed that item out with the wrench. Other wrenches are correct, and interestingly are a combination of what you spoke of. The largest is different than the other 4. Thanks, how does this look now? Allen wrench is blocked behind the spare belt, but there. At one time or another over the past 30 years I've owned multiple 930's...and have poached a few tools here and there from kits, not on purpose! Had no idea how important this stuff has become. Trying to have the one with my car correct and sorted now. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks good. Not to be picky (which I tend to be with myself), the fan wrench did not have a black handle and the belt was not toothed. Both parts should be easy to find. The part number for the belt is 999 192 176 50. There should also be a fuse pack in the kit (pudenz). It is usually found with the pliers in the second spot to the left (where your screwdriver is).
Please, be picky, this is a big help as I assumed without ever looking that everything was as it should be and it wasn't. I will dig for fuse packs, I have 'vintage' ones laying around somewhere. Here is the tool with the black handle. Are you sure this is not correct? I really don't know, but am hopeful it is, seems correct? and the 'toothy' belt is exact dimensions, so guessing it is a suitable replacement? I have no idea where it came from? Yes its the same tool but-the ones that were included in the tool kits looked like this: Image Unavailable, Please Login
The toothed belt is a replacement. The original belts that were included in the kits from Porsche were not toothed. They are very easy to get from Porsche and are not expensive.
My '79 also came with 2 Red Tags on the Tool Bag. I always thought the Tag(s) might be a way for Porsche to differentiate what the Bag contained when they pulled for delivery with the car. It appears that might not be correct. While both Mike's and my 930 are part of the North American early '79 930 build (before August 1979), his is a Sun Roof car and mine is not and this makes the contents of the Bags different. Mike's Bag should contain the emergency Sun Roof Tool, mine does not have that Tool (no Sun Roof). Guess that squashes that theory. My Bag was delivered with a different Belt than the one currently listed in the PETs. It is an earlier part number, 999 192 013 050. also smooth without teeth. A search on Pelican shows 999 192 013 050 was Superseded by 999 192 176 50. Both of these Belts are 9.5X710. Possible 999 192 013 050 is the correct number for these Bags? . 999 192 013 50 is the correct belt number. Like you said it has been replaced with 999 192 176 50 many years ago. Same belt different part number.
Jay, thanks again for all your help. Not done. Do you have a source for the belts and the fuses? Are the fuses in a box? I don't have, but want to complete these details. Also do you know if the small shop towel was also there at one time? Or is that an early 911 thing?
Here is a picture of the tool kit from my '79 number 544. The kit was in the plastic 'Porsche Genuine Parts Bag' included in the bag with the tool kit was a clear plastic bag for the tire, a clear plastic cover and the gloves for changing the tire. There was also a small bag with screws and a extra license plate frame. The fuses on the top were the ones that came with that particular kit. Later '79 and up had the bottom style. The fuses pack on the bottom came with another tool kit. Both styles are correct for '79. A few weeks ago I saw the bottom style sell on Ebay for $62. You can buy the fuses cheap, but finding them the way they came in the tool kits can get more pricey. Shop towel did not come with the kit. The belts can be bought from Pelican, Ebay etc. There is a guy-orangebarproducts.com that is reproducing the early style fuse packs. I will keep my eye out for a spare pudenz fuse pack for you. Fantastic help Jay. I greatly appreciate the info as I am sure all owners of this vintage 930's do. I have a few items to secure and please, if you run across a fuse pac, hook me up . I'll keep an eye out too.
This VDO tire gauge was also included in the 'Genuine Porsche Parts bag'. I have seen other 930 turbos from different years with the same gauge just a different color pouch. I have seen other '79's with this blue pouch. Sloane Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sloane (Jay), I have the pouch, but missing gauge. This chase for details is silly $$, but always seems to be costing more later, so I aim to hunt this stuff down when I can. On the plus side, and furthering into that little Porsche bag of goodies, I've got virgin touch up paint, in box, and all 3 nos wiper blades. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My CR radio has a part number that starts with 928. I know 928s had the same radio (different knobs and faceplate). Is this normal? It doesn't make sense that there would be a different part number on the chassis just because the knobs were different and I certainly can't imagine that you would have gone to a parts counter at the dealership and heard that they have a CR for a 928 and a 911SC with corresponding part numbers but they don't have a 930 radio. Thoughts? Thanks!
Hope you can see the 928 part number and recognize it as a correct CR radio for a July 79 build car. I am kind of a kook when it comes to radios for these cars. The faceplate and mounting hardware are still in the car with a Berlin. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Berlin - cool, had one in my dd back in the 80's, what a hoot those things. I can't tell from your photo what the front looks like. This is what the original '930' radio circa '79 looks like. I think I have some extra of those elusive knobs in a box in my mess. I've been digging for nitpicky detail stuff to get my car up to top level...I've got 3 of 4 rear license plate factory screws, and one sub, not bad, but not engineered like everything Porsche produces, even screws, lol. And I have 2 of 4 front license plate screws, and am missing the 2 screws that attach the license plate holder to the front valance. Any idea where I can get legit SCREWS? Thanks for any help with this. I know, whacky. I did over a long period see 7k miles on the road. I then started converting my nicely, not over used car into a legitimate collector grade car. So now it's get it absolutely correct in every detail time. I kind of enjoy the hunt for items and have a lot of legit old stuff from ages of cars and hobby. Image Unavailable, Please Login
There were 2 CR Radios used on the 1979 North American 930. I have first posted a picture of the earlier Flat Knob CR style followed by Mikes picture of the later "Inner-Circle Knob" CR style to compare. Both of these NA CR radios have numeric faces that end at 108 on the FM scale. Other than the tuning knobs, there are no facial differences between these two radios. European (World) CRs have faces which end at 104 FM. I have the earlier original correct Flat Knob CR in my car but it has not been out so I cannot confirm what the part number is. The 928 number on Drogos later CR does not surprise me (nor would a 928 number on an early CR). The 930 and 928 were Top Line Porsches at the time and very likely may have shared the same unit. If the later CR actually did change from something else to a 928 number maybe it was the result of a fix (replacement) to fill a production void with 928 shelf stock due to unanticipated surge in NA 930 sales. Drogo, yes, the "Inner-Circle Knob" CR style would be correct for a July 79 build NA 930. I see from the sticker on it that it is a US version so it should have the correct 108 FM face. Great stuff. I'm doing simultaneous restorations on both a '76 tc and a '78 turbo euro. The CR radio was much harder to source than the earlier Bamberg. I finally found the correct European cr on German eBay. It has the dimpled knobs. I'm still missing the correct recessed faceplate if anyone has one!? And yes the 928 came w the same CR. Still good deals out there. A LHD in GB should have gotten the Euro buyers att. Just a short hop over the channel. If I were still an active dealer, even from the far away land of the USA I would have been bidding/ buying this one. Buying frenzy over for awhile?
