1979 Porsche 930 (...and 78's too!)

I only get to drive the ones I have a few hundred miles each year. Maybe if I move to a more hospitable climate??

 

A car from Ca with low miles not really a really great example? That is not what I have heard about them. I suppose low miles in freeway stop and go with the ac on would take its toll especially with valet parking and whatever else is bad for a 930 might be in this cars past. I have always gotten nice ones so thanks.

I am wondering that myself? I see on Ebay cars that supposedly sold and then they keep getting listed again. The car at Silverstone auctions, while I have not viewed it in person, I have about 50 pictures of it from a few years ago before it went overseas and it was a mostly original car, in a PTS color. It just seems very well bought, but again I did not see it in person.

Remember the green '78 that was not even running with higher miles and needed alot of work that I believe sold for around that price.

I think the fact that this car is a "left Hooker" hurt the car by 5K. Left hand cars in the UK don't sell so well. This car being a U.S. car would have to have its sales tax charged on the full MSRP from 1979. I can see this deterring German and French buyers.

 

The green 930 at Autofarm is owned by a well known car dealer who knows a thing or two about special cars, it will be interesting to see if this one comes up for sale in the near future...

No affiliation. Decent looking non-sunroof very early 3.3 example. Although the VIN is not listed, this car is noted as 12/451 which would make the VIN 9308800023.

I know the 3.0 Turbos had hand throttles but was not aware of any on the 3.3 cars. Can anyone comment?

Very interesting...I've never seen a hand throttle in a 3.3 liter Turbo. It seems odd that you would need a hand throttle when the 3.3 liter engines incorporated the start valve/relay that automatically revs the engine higher than idle when started cold.

Lets hope the sale of this car is not blanked out with commercials like in the last auction of Porsches that were in prime time live coverage at Mecum Newport Beach auction. Those boulevard cruiser muscle car worshipers that moderate the sale did it last time twice. One Porsche was the 3rd highest sale of the day, but still blanked out. They are an obstinate bunch that had little good to say about a Porsche at the Newport Beach sale. The only Porsche I saw in the TV coverage was a 356 and they commented on how under powered it was. This 930 looks like one that could be a good deal if most bidders are of the US muscle car mindset or wanting a 930 with a standard color. If you are in the area you might just steal this one.

Yes this is the same car. The VIN should be 9308800063. Originally from California, but spent most of its life in Illinois. Sloan sold it back in February/ March. I inquired on the car. I don't understand why you wouldn't at least have a thorough detail and cleaning before you take pictures and post it online. Maybe even refinish the wheels. Hopefully it'll look better on the block. Nice original car, regardless.

 

We'll see if Sloan sold to soon. When I saw it on his site I was surprised at the price.

Mecum is a poor choice for this car.

 

i think it was around $65k then after not selling it the price went up to around $85k? tony you may remember better. maybe sloan didn't sell it and the owner pulled it and is taking it to Mecum?

 

For sure, but some of his buyers are up to speed in market trends and his commission are way less than most. Actually for this car it might be OK. Vintage color and still very useable instead of buying the same old same old. I would not be surprised with decent bidding on this one.

 

To go to RM or Gooding would require no reserve for a car of this value.

 

Sloan told me it was sold, probably for asking, 85k. But you never know...

 

I dont believe Sloan sold it. I spoke through email with the owner of this car a few months ago. I was looking for a nice early 930 for a client. I will go to the auction and check it out.

 

While cruising the Porsche threads earlier I came upon a picture (on Pelican) of a '79 RoW 930 with an I/C Shroud that I had never seen before. Credit for the post on Pelican goes to member patina.

I do not recall ever seeing this on any '78 or '79 930 OEM I/C (RoW or North American). Is it a shroud to protect the electrics on the left wall in place of the usual cover attached with wing nuts? All '79 I/C's have the flanges on the left and front that would capture it. The red '79 appears to be an early car. The pictured I/C assemblies are dated 10/78 and 11/78.
