I think that pretty much describes me after seeing a show on TV last night. Will Buxton and his producer did a special called "Road to Marinello" where they took a trip to the Mecca (with a stop at Pininfarina). After Will's emotional display in a 206, the interview with Luca, the tour of the facilities, the test drive, seeing the collection of past Ferraris, even the gift shop (yeah, I'd splurge for a Ferrari clad bear), pretty much a culmination of what boiled down to the iconoclast we kno as Ferrari. I don't think I can remain humble any longer. For any of you who also saw the show, I ask: Do you agree (or is it just me), that Ferrari is actually the car all others are compared with (I really don't think you can honestly or accurately answer this question unless you saw this particular show) and have been since 1951? I mean, the engines; the power and speed; the racing heritage; the drivers; the exculsivity (sp); the asthetics; the designs. OK, so there was Maserati, but other than the 3500 GT, Mistral, Ghibli, and Bora..... so what? They built (successful) race cars. So did Porsche and Ford. Lamborghini?????.....began building cars because of Ferrari. Corvette? Like Vin Diesel said in XXX, "It's just a Corvette". No! Ferrari is the marque all others are compared to and after last nights episode, it proved to me that I'm a hypocrite and have actually been known to lie. How so? When friends or aquaintances get together and the conversation turns to cars (which with me, ALLWAYS has), and they tell me waht they're driving (BMW, MB, Vette, 'Stang, XKR or XK8, F-Type, Porsche, Camaro, Challanger, etc...), I smile and out comes the hypocrisy. I say things like, "Hey that's neat." "I bet you really like that car". "Those are cool cars." Then the lying starts: "Yeah, I like those." "I wouldn't mind having one of those." When in reality, after seeing the programme last night, everything else is a lesser car and can't measure up. I'm terrible and I'm affraid I'm only gonna get worse. Now mind you, it's not just one of the items I pointed out above that makes Ferrari, Ferrari, but it's the culmination of all of them and Ferrari is the only car that can boast having all of them. Sure, the others can share in one or two. But not all. So, I think from now on, instead of lying, I'll just keep my mouth shut and say something like, "What ever floats your boat." After all, there are only two types of people in the world. Those who own a Ferrari and those who dont. If you haven't seen the show, you need to.

I saw the show too. I think what Buxton got right is that Ferrari is an emotional experience! To be given the keys to an FF and drive from Budapest to Maranello...who wouldn't take that journey. And to drive an F12 around Fiorano...what I would give to experience a modern era car and feel the power that comes from years of experience from one of the most iconic cars on the planet!! if that doesn't get your heart pumping...I'm not sure what will?

Will Buxton gave us some insight into his past/childhood. He's lusted after a 246 Dino since he was a kid. To finally be given the chance to sit in one and experience the sights and smells of that brought out the memories and emotion that we all feel (either as an owner or as a fan of the marque) in one way or another.

    Great show!!

Knowing the history I found my visit to Maranello to be a bit emotional. It was interesting.

But I still like all cars.

Haven't seen the show. I have slow internet and no TV. Guess I'm out of luck.

Here's a link to the transcript of the interview Buxton did in the movie. His description of what are the ingredients that make a Ferrari so special is a wonderful summary of what attracts us to these cars.

The Road to? Luca | The Buxton Blog

This is the summary quote that I like. " All these ingredients means emotional driving. And it’s easy to say, difficult to explain, unless you drive the car and you feel something in the car; the music of the engine."

He was forced out 3 days after he gave this interview.

I bought my 1986 Mondial Coupe just to find out what all the fuss is about. Lets get performance out of the way. A modern 6 cyl Camaro will give me a run for my money. There are Hyundis that might take me in a 1/4 mile drag.

That said, the Ferrari provides a lot of theatrics. Very mechanical in all respects. In my case almost agricultural in steering and engine noise. This is a little bitty 8 cyl engine that could be made to run and sound like a sewing machine. Instead it sounds like an indie racer. The transmission is straight out of old time NASCAR and makes my 1984 Z-28 feel refined.

Handling is a wonder of smoke and mirrors. The car feels like it is working hard in even a modest corner, but has more cornering in it. And in an emergency all the smoke disipates and it just goes where pointed Right Now. It is the safest chasis I have ever driven. The 911 of the era will kill you. The Ferrari is quietly snoozing and jumps to life no matter what screw up you or the other drivers on the road might engineer. it will save you.

One thing I have learned is to humor people who wish to talk about it. I will never tell them a 6cyl Camaro would be a good challenge, or that any number of modern grocery getters have as much or more acceleration. I screwed up once when I told some guys I bought new tires. They just said "I can't imagine what tires for a Ferrari might cost!"

I stupidly told them my Continental Extreme Contact DWs cost about $100 each. They are fine tires and given the fact I wear tires out in 6,000 miles are a wise choice.
