I hadn't noticed how utterly unqualified the new fellow running Scuderia Ferrari seems to me to be. Here's what he's done:

Arrivabene comes to Ferrari from Philip Morris, which he joined in 1997 after a 20-year career in marketing and promotions in Italy and abroad. He was most recently vice president of consumer channel strategy and event marketing with Philip Morris, working closely on the partnership with Ferrari.

A real professional in international automobile racing at the highest level. This seems to accord with Marchione's direction, doesn't it?

I don't know anything about the guy, and I don't get hiring someone with NO F1 experience either....but if it makes u feel better, there are few companies that are better run than PM. Absolutely one of the finest managed corporations with a history of first class business results. SF could do worse than hire someone with PM credentials

The impression I get is he's been a fixture in the F1 paddock for 20 years. He knows, and for the most part, is friends with the key players. Ferrari and most importantly Sergio Marchionne feels it's important to have a team principle that can work deals to ensure any rules and F1/CVC money remain in Ferrari's favor. From everything I've read, Marco Mattiacci was too new and too green to know how to play the game or in other words was not the politician Ferrari needs. As far as real management skills, I assume Arrivabene at Marlboro had to manage a marketing team, but lets get real, managing a F1 team is a whole different story.

He was brought in to manage Ecclestone and CVC and F-1 money.

They will most likely hire some one ( Ross Brawn) I hope...

I think he's in Ferrari also to take care of the return for the billions PM invests in the team

I never understood Mattiacci's appointment, except for the fact that he was a Ferrari 'lifer' . And while Arrivabene may have been a superb manager at PM, familiar with the marketing and politics of F1, managing all aspects of a competitive Formula 1 team requires far more than friendship with the key players and familiarity with the rules of the F.I.A. and F1 game.

Bottom line, I am far from optimistic about the likelihood of the Scuderia's return to competing seriously for world championships on Marchione's watch.

Sometimes you don't need experience in a certain field to successfully handle a managerial position in it.

One example strikes me: Flavio Briattore.

He came out from a background in knitwear marketing with zero experience in motor racing. Yet, he landed to top job at Enstone, and supervised that team to 4 World Drivers Championship.

You can't call that a failure...

Mr. Mattiacci was never considered more than a temporary replacement for Stefano. Sergio, and Johnny Elkann put him place in order to bust up Stefano and Mr. M on their way of clearing out the old guard.. If you look back at the annual FIAT board meeting, Mr. M wasn't even invited, it was obvious he was leaving too.

As for Mr. Arrivabene, given the amount of money that Marlboro gives Ferrari every year, and the fact they own the outside of the car, they actually sell advertising space to the other sponsors, it's no surprise he is in charge. As for him running the team, he can hire Ross, Flavio or someone else with the experience to get technical stuff done while he brings in the cash to support the team..

If he is smart, and he obviously is, he will hire a right hand man to do all the technical stuff while he plays golf with the F1 "influencers". That is how the big boys (those smart enough not to let their egos run them) play the game.

I see him made out to be an F1 fixture as well. I am sure politics and money are involved. But after the shellacking SF got from the new powerplant era and rules, I think they are looking for a good rules and regs leader which A appears to be. This will all come to naught if the engineering and relationship with the drivers does not materialize.

The rumor is that Bernie didn't like Mattiachi. He knows Arrivabene quite well and likes him. Ferrari is trying to get itself back into a position of influence with the FIA, something they seem to have lost in recent years.
