I'm waiting for the 2016 FF in hopes of a few improvements to this near perfect Fighting Horse ! No, I don't call it a Prancing Horse. From Wikipedia " It is not uncommon to see stallions rearing in the wild when they fight, while striking at their opponent with their front legs. " The Ferrari V12 is a fighting horse. The FF being all wheel drive can strike at the front. Ok, I'm off my soap box. When might we get information as to what will be coming in the late Fall? I want to configure one and get an order in early. Would that mean a late Spring order time? Would we have to wait until the 2016 is debuted to order it with options/colors? On colors: I want a two tone paint with a base color of bronze/red. Any pictures or renderings out there? I just got a 2014 458 Spider black/grey/black with low miles so I am well satisfied waiting for the new FF. Thanks for your potential feedback. Cheers Ricardo
I'm waiting for info on the "updated" FF as well. I found a little information: 2016 Ferrari FF Coupe ? Feature ? Car and Driver Is any of this "information" accurate? Does anyone else have any information??? Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have no special crystal ball about changes for the '16FF. FWIW I ordered my '14 in August of 2013. It was built in late November (serial # 200022 ) and appeared just around Christmas time on the West Coast, having been airshipped. I assume that regular shipment would have produced it around January or February. So assuming that the model year switches over in September, you can back off two months on that scenario, making it reasonable to inquire about an allocation around May or June. Hope that gives you some idea. Meanwhile enjoy your Spider. However, having both an Italia and an FF, I will tell you that nothing sounds like the V12. It is otherworldly.
Yes, if "model changes" you are waiting for include a two seat 4-wheel drive coupe, it will be a long wait.
There are threads on this. It has been beat to death. Automotive journalism, like other fields of journalism, makes up the story when there is none.
Thanks for the comments. I had heard there may be an 8 speed and engine tweaks that might improve fuel mileage, etc. Not that fuel economics is a factor in Ferrari ownership. It would be nice in a GT for road trips. By the way, the 458 scared me so I traded it even for a 2015 FF the dealership had. I love it. I look for any excuse to drive somewhere. I even popped the rear hatch for a short time just to better hear that exhaust! Another V12 fan.
The FF's only bugaboo is it's polarizing styling. I like it….but I don't know if I love it. The FF only makes me go gaga when its got some tasty aftermarket touches like a lowered stance, and Novitec NF4 wheels. My wish is to see the FF's design evolve into something sleeker like the Fisker Karma. THAT is one of the most elegant and aggressive shapes I can recall seeing in a long time. I know FF might lose a bit of its utility, but it would be nice to see it become something so damn beautiful that nobody could argue with it. A car as capable as the FF shouldn't get ragged on by dismissing it as a 'clown shoe'. My Frankenstein rendering was done in haste BTW. Image Unavailable, Please Login
You still need headroom in the back seat. If not needed then buy a F12. My older kids go to dinner with my wife and me and there is comfortable room in the back of the FF as it is.
Roofline revised to add rear passenger headroom and increase boot capacity .. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't believe there are any plans to get rid of the Getrag gearbox that sits in all current Ferrari's. By todays standards, an 8 speed would mean a fully automatic transmission - which is not going to happen.
I have heard nothing and considering the timetable for the California update I am seeing another 1-2 years of the same at minimum.
Nor should it. Fact is, I don't think there's a need for more than seven forward gears in a sports car. In family sedans, trucks, SUVs, minivans, surepile on those gears. Better fuel economy and better acceleration. But any car that's meant to be shifted manuallyand in spite of the lack of a clutch pedal, I consider Ferraris cars meant to be shifted by the driver, not a computerseven gears is plenty. In my experience, trying to manually shift eight- or nine-speed transmissions just becomes confusing. I never know which gear I should be in. Is that corner a second- or third-gear turn? Do I need to flick up to fifth on this straightaway, or should I keep it in fourth? There's often not enough difference between the gear ratios to make a real difference, so I wind up second-guessing myself...and just leave it in Sport mode. Which, IMHO, takes a lot of the fun out of driving. Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, AMG, M, RS: Seven gears is enough. #endrant
Good point on the current tranny. Having 300 mi on '15 FF I see it's got long legged gears allowing fun rev-up to shift. Higher gearing should improve cruising mileage. Size wise, it's just my wife, Basenji, & me on road trips. The fold down back seat is a must for longer trips. In the US West we need several days to cover lots of territory so storage is valued. Dog crate, golf clubs, luggage, food, phone apps, nav... in a Ferrari ! Come on ;-)
Jason, IMO really depends on how many gears it uses as overdrive. You could easily have a nine speed gearbox where 7, 8 and 9 are overdrive and you'll ever only need the first 6 for regular driving. The increase in FI engines with low turbo lag an massive torque can also make the car less dependent on being in the right gear, contributing to the result of you feeling less of a difference between gears (although closer gear ratios is also a valid point, as there is a larger margin to play on with the od gears). On a modern Ferrari, you'll reach top speed in 7th with those last few mph's over 6th, but other than that 7th is practically a cruising gear. To the best of my knowledge, no car on the market today has 8 or 9 "driving gears". The upper gears are used as an overdrive function. Treat it as a 7 speed when you're driving sportively.
To revive this thread a little - wouldn't you think that we would have seen some mules if the refresh was in fact 2016?
No. They don't necessarily start running around that early. Most of the high-profile mule spottings are of halo models and new platforms that require a lot more R&D than an M, so don't use those timelines as a reference. For instance the LaF mules had to start early if they wanted to get the calibration right for planned unveil, and the same with the turbo mules. I haven't heard word of any other mules than 458M running around lately. But I know far from everything...
Wasn't there a rumor that the M version of the FF will come in two models. One will retain the V12, the other will have the TT V8 from the Cali targeting mostly the Chinese market?
