I would like to ask you ladies and gents a question that has gnawed at me for a year or two now. Why not the F50?

I came of age right as the F50 was the supercar of the day, alongside the F1. And while I absolutely get why the world is now bonkers for the F1, I guess I don't quite grasp why the F50 seems to be the red-headed stepchild of the Ferrari supercar lineup.

It seems its motor is possibly the most special of all supercars.

Its construction was ahead of its time, like the F1s, but unlike the F40s.

The noise seems to be epic.

I find it a striking car, especially in the flesh.

I am not here to launch a political campaign, I'm just asking ... why not the F50? Why is it sort of ignored just a bit?

I think many true enthusiasts agree with you, and the F50 is very revered. A good number of my clients have them, but, they are pretty rare so perhaps they don't make it into popular media or appear at events as much.

F50's making a strong comeback. Starting to see people walk by F40 to check out F50. But they still stop at Enzo first.

F50 is my favorite for the street.

    I want a F50, and I always will.

I don't care what others think about it or what the reviewers say. To own one, is a goal of mine.

Agree. The overall "feel" of the F50 (steering, chassis, gearbox) is better.....

Exactly why I bought my F50 when I did... Carbon tub, F1 derived engine and engineering, V12, manual, very limited numbers.... They didn't make the impact the F50 did due to there being more supercars around by then and it not being a massive leap on in performance in a straight line which are the numbers that get headlines. Ferrari didnt allow any proper road tests and I really think the roof off thing really hurt them. Personally, and i think most will agree, that that its an odd looking thing with the roof off, with the roof on though its beautiful to my eyes and mine will never run with the roof off. To drive and in build quality it makes my F40 seem like the shonky kit car it is;)

The F50 still has someway to rise yet in value I believe with F40 and F50 prices (for proper cars) being comparable her in the UK but as more of the F50 generation make their money it will perform better over the next decade. Not that that matters though as its made to be driven not speculated on and it drives so well. That engine and gearbox are just sublime.....

I had an F-50. Greatest Car Ever. I owned it with a partner. Wish we had never sold it.

V12 naturally aspirated stick shift Ferrari supercar - I can just stop right there ...

I think it was unloved for a while (how long did it sit at $5-600k?) because of looks that some say are slightly goofy with those long curved lines. Maybe it was ahead of it's time as it was created when other supercars had much tauter lines, but I do have bad thoughts about getting one, taking the top off and burying the throttle in third gear and never lifting off ...

BUT the stock exhaust doesn't do it justice whatsoever, to hear the greatness of its sound you need an aftermarket exhaust then take the roof off and hear it.

As Bill said, it is better on the twisty stuff than the F40 but the F40 still has that special thrill and still feels slightly rawer in my opinion.

Yes, this is more modern though.

They made ~64 F1 roadcars and over 350 F50s, which explains the dramatic difference in value, and simply the F1 was a more unique and impressive car to begin with as far as design, spirit and ultimate performance is concerned. The F50 was to some simply one in a line of Ferrari supercars while the F1 was sort of in a class by itself before the P1 came around.

F40 over past years has sort of become the internet-cool-guy car and has gotten a lot more attention than the F50 may have gotten. Also in praising the F40 a lot of people tend to disparage the F50. The F40 (even moreseo the 288GTO) is a lot more hipster than the F50.

Many people thought and still think the F50 is ugly, sort of caught in a designer's no-man's land between the 80s and the 2000s. Also some people think that the F50 was some sort of disappointment, or was slow, or something else ridiculous. All of these people are idiots, but that's another story ;)

Personally if I could choose only one Ferrari to keep forever, it would be an F50.

The F1 outshined it completely. 241mph and a win at Le Mans, plus the three seat layout and it being McLaren's first car back in the time when they were THE team in F1.

I love the F50 though. By far my favourite Ferrari supercar and by far the best sounding too. The styling is very 90's but I was born and raised in the 90's so it looks amazing to me.

It's also the only true supercar I've seen out in the wild and seeing it even amongst other sportscars in Puerto Banus/Marbella was an incredible thing as an 8 year old kid.

I believe most if not all motoring press highly rate it and in many cases reckon it's the best of the first four supercars so it's slowly but surely getting the true appreciation it deserves.

Am I right in saying Ferrari seriously limited testing by the press when it was launched which hampered all subsequent reviews? Perhaps they were scared of the backlash because of the similar performance to the F40 and of the numbers difference to the F1?

As far as looks, its one of those cars that simply looks 10x better in the flesh than in pictures due to its incredibly low/wide stance. So my bet is 99% of people who call it 'ugly' have never seen one in person and therefore have no idea how incredibly well-proportioned it actually is. It's the lowest/widest car Ive ever seen with the shortest front hood/overhang and neither shows in pics as they often look to be taller and have super long hoods in photos.

Catch one randomly driving down the street though and you'll never believe its a 20-year old car or design. See one in person and you'll appreciate it instantly - add in the naturally-aspirated 9000rpm V12, ultra-light curb weight, best 6-speed manual Ferrari ever made and lack of all the technological gimmikery that weighs down and takes all the fun out of 'modern' digital supercars and what you're left with to me is the true pinnacle of the Ferrari company. I want 2, 1 for my daily driver and one for the family room :)
