I know the popular (and perhaps only) mounting option for a fire extinguisher in the 355 is in front of the passenger seat, but what would I be drilling into if I chose to mount it in this position?

Henry its funny you would ask. When i was down i bought an extinguisher and i thought the same thing i felt that was the best place as well. Maybe when im back we can lift the cars and have a look from underneath. I like that position the best.

Anyone ever mounted it on the shelf behind the passenger seat? I know underneath is where the gas tank is located. That is my plan but need to evaluate the clearance in order to avoid tapping into the gas tank.

I like the central position below the dashboard.

How did you drill ? Did you take off the carpet before ? I wouldn't dare to put screws just like that in there.

Thanks in advance for the info or DIY indications :)

I did on my 348. You can mount it securely to the aluminum trim at the front of the parcel shelf. Not sure if the 355 has similar trim or not. It doesn't require drilling into the car at all, just one small hole through the inside of the trim metal, invisible once mounted. The second mounting bolt is the existing stud on the trim piece itself, which is secured into the body.

It is held in the back by the carpet where the shelf turns vertical. Very secure and very unobtrusive to install. Plus I think it's the most accessible place. The first thing I'm going to do in a fire is jump out of the car. Mounted here you can just reach behind the seat and unlatch the extinguisher. The only downside is that you can't stow a folding targa top there, however it doesn't interfere with the normal top's stowage.

I planned to post a howto on doing this, but never got around to it. I'll post some pictures here off my phone so you can see.

If you guys are mounting 1.25 pounders, they're too small.

Mine is 2.5lb as well. The trim behind the seats in my 95 355 is too unstable to mount anything heavy. I thought about the transmission tunnel placement, but when I mocked-up the setting, it seemed like it would be too difficult to reach the release latches easily. I agree that any access that would allow me to exit the car and then retrieve the extinguisher would be my fist choice. The location I suggested (between the driver's seat and door) fills that requirement and is well out of the way during everyday use.

To me it's the only logical place. But I have to admit I'm a poseur and did it for the look, not the safety...if the fire is minor, it may be helpful. If it's a large fire, run away-let-it-burn-collect-insurance is the way to go. No sense risking your life trying to be a hero for a car (not even a Ferrari)

I went ahead and just put the screws, I used 1 inch stainless steel screws.

That's the million dollar question. There is solid backing behind the carpet, but I need to know what I'll be drilling into. I believe that the fuel tank is well off to the center of the car, but hydraulic lines and other important things may be running through that area. I removed and replaced my driver's side radiator some time back, but don't recall noticing any obstacles to the inside of the intake louvers.

I didn't drill, I just pushed a little with the screwdriver and it caught the steel behind the carpet and I was able to pierce it and kept screwing. must have gone in no more than 1/4-3/8 of an inch.
