SPEEDO IN KMS

Does anyone know where I can find a Speedo in Kms for my 308 GTS? Can the face just be replaced? Thanks

 

Palo Alto will probably have loads of plates they changed out on Euro imports

 

Another vote for Palo Alto. I've used them many times and have never been disappointed.

Barry, please keep us updated on what you find. My Euro QV has a speedo in MPH, since it's essentially a LHD UK-spec car. I'd also prefer a speedo face showing km/h, even if the odometer still shows miles.

I have a 76 GTB. I would be interested in a km speedo as well.

 

Palo Alto for conversions, expensive and worth EVERY Penny, or Ebay for a complete KM unit. They do pop-up more often than I can afford to buy them.

Why bother changing to KM? Is it a requirement in Manitoba? Jon

 

I think I looked at that one when it's been posted in the Classifieds - but it's from an earlier 308, correct? I don't recall the discussions exactly, but I believe there were two different versions of speedometers used in the 308 model span - that's the early version, and by the 83-85 QV they used a second series which was not compatible with the first series.

Ace355 - EMILIO's speedometer should work for you!

 

Why change though. In everyday driving, the speed is 60 or 80 or 100/hr = 40/50/60 miles/hour. It's like one can go faster in Manitoba else the risk of hitting a moose. ��
During a period where I was driving a USA import in Alberta, I used a nail polish line on the speedo glass to mark 60 and 100km on the 40 and 60 mile markers. The lines could be easily removed with nail polish remover and a different shade of pink used the next month to mark my mood swings.

 

There are three different versions, kman369's Speedo is most likely a type 2 version (1983), so the one Emilio offers (type 1, 1979) unfortunately won't work without a hardware modification. +1 for Hartmut at Palo Alto Speedometers.

This is also a type 1 version. You can recognize those by the triangular shape of the indicator lights.

 

But different version...
- Apparently 50 KPH was important at that time
- The tick marks up to 40 KPH are less in number
- The top of the dial is approximately 145KPH instead of 140
- The white lamp symbol is different
- The numerals use a hollow script
- The marked speed ticks are all different between 40 and 280KPH

These are the differences that I see from Emilio's. There may be more.

It seems that finding a correct speedo once it has been swapped may be more of a challenge than one might think.

Another thing to think about if you want to keep it in KM/H. I had Hartmut re-face the speedo on my 72 Innocenti Mini Cooper with a small MPH scale.

sorry for slight off topic but I was noticing that my speedo didn't go quite to 0 when stopped, glad to see from these pics that many don't!

 

50 Km/h is the city speed limit in many EU Countries, I know there was a time (maybe still is) where it had to be marked on Italian speedometers.

 

Now that makes sense since all my instruments are marked in italian. It's one of the things I love most about my car...

From what I've seen, none go to zero.

Mine rests at roughly 15KPH, Emilio's rests at roughly 8KPH, and U.S. cars at roughly 10MPH? Funny...but presumably all due to face differences? Another cool Ferrari mystery.
