Now that I'm on my second time through the Ferrari search process...

FerrariAds "wanted" ads get a lot of traffic (over 6,000 views so far for mine), but it would save me a lot of phone calls and emails if there was a central "wanted" registry that could be accessed by all dealers and maybe private sellers as well. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for, and wouldn't mind making that information available to dealers and private sellers.

As a seller, when I list a car for sale, I could specify the basic parameters -- year, model, variant, gearbox type, mileage -- and subscribers would get email notifications. Likewise, sellers could query the database so that if they're taking in, say, a blue F355 GTS on trade they know who's on the hunt for that car in that color.

    So...

Is this something that could be created on FChat in Rob's spare time? Call it FerrariMatch or something.
    Or does this already exist?
Or does this not exist because it's a dumb idea?

I think this is a great idea. What are we waiting for? Anyone looking for a black/tan 360 F1 Spider? There's one for sale privately out here; hasn't been advertised yet.

What would you suggest? An open thread, sticky, that people could post their 'wanted' cars in?

The problem I see is if it's open, and anyone can post, then how do you keep the comments not related to 'Car Wanted' out? If you close it, then it would have to be updated by a moderator.

And, what happens when someone finds what they're looking for?

I think the current process of posting an individual "Wanted" ad is the best solution right now...

Convince me otherwise.... I really am open to the idea.

And, I'll bring it up in the Moderator forum for discussion.

(and...it wouldn't be the first time we've discussed Bullfighter in the mod forum)

    :D :D :D

I think it sounds like you're looking for the ebay of wanted lists, is that right?

Your idea could be setup like an auction site where you put your "wanted" item up for "auction". At that point anyone who has the thing you're looking for would bid for your attention to their example of your wanted item. You would then contact the "bidders" to find out which one, if any, is the right one for you. You like the item from Bidder A, and negotiate a fair price with him or her. Your auction is then closed.

A dealer, with say a 1985 US 308 GTB in perfect low mileage condition for sale, would search the auction site to see if anyone is already out there looking for one. The dealer finds 6 "wanted" auctions for that item and lists his or her item on all 6 "auctions". The dealer can then be contacted by any of the six potential buyers and attempt to sell his or her item.

    ...Or something like that. :)

    Great idea.

Ideally, this could be a section with sub-sections for the different models. Just like what we already have for model-specific discussions. So if you go into the "Wanted > 360" section, you would see a bunch of specific posts from individuals who want 360s with details about their location, required specs, preferred specs, price, etc. When that poster either purchases a car or loses interest, they can remove that post so it doesn't sit there and remain stale. This way anyone (dealer, Fchatter, etc) with a car for sale can go and see who is looking for their car. It would also be great for those posters who have a car "available" but not on the market and don't want to waste time/hassle on the process of putting their car up for sale. They could negotiate a private transaction without a lot of hype and all the hoops one must go through with mountains of inquiries from non-buyers.

This could be a really valuable service.

I was just watching a Jay Leno's Garage about the Pantera and he was saying, "don't buy a Pantera unless you do it from the Pantera community" because those cars require so much sorting, etc. This type of function on Fchat could really add a lot of value I think. The key is that it's always an active list of cars actually wanted at that time, not just a rolling message board. Not sure if the functionality is possible without a lot of effort though.

Was thinking it might literally be a "matchmaking" type database. If someone is seeking an F430 coupe in grigio with under 20,000 miles, he would submit an entry to the database under his user name. How many criteria could we accommodate? Not sure, but for most of us if you have the model, year, colors exterior/interior, gearbox, mileage, condition and major options (e.g. chairs and flares for a 246), that's pretty much all you could hope to specify for a used Ferrari.

If you wanted to make it more sophisticated, ask the potential buyer to specify a price range. That way the buyer looking for a $50,000 F430 can be safely ignored by everyone.

In the same way ads expire in FML, these would have to be renewed after some period, maybe 3 months (?) The current arrangement of wanted ads scrolling into oblivion isn't great, because for the classic/vintage stuff it can take a while to find a car.

Prospective buyers would be giving explicit permission to be contacted by sellers via email or PM.

It wouldn't have to be a discussion thread, just something a seller could query -- and ideally a lot of sellers including sponsor dealers, who I think would become more numerous if they knew they could get a read on what FChat'ers are actively looking to buy. I.e., if a dealer thinks he may have an F430 in blue with a three-pedal manual gearbox coming in on trade, he might query the database and find there are 15 FChat'ers searching for that model with that gearbox, and maybe 7 of them want red specifically, So, 8 prospects...

I was talking with one of the sales guys at Boardwalk last week, because I'm hunting for a nice late 308 QV, and he said they almost never take them into inventory because most customers want near-new models. If, however, dealers could quickly poll "FerrariMatch", they could gauge potential buyers before buying the car. It could be pre-sold.

    Lol

    This.

I think the functionality would rely on search more than the usual rolling message concept.
