How should I price my '85 Euro GTS QV with 21xxx miles and in need of a major?

I have an '85 Euro 308 GTS QV in rosso / nero. I would like an '85 US 308 GTS QV in grigio titanio / rosso, so I'm going to sell my car. I want a US car because I will be moving to California soon, and I actually like the US rear deck more than the Euro.

My car has 21xxx miles, a worn first gear synchro, and in need of a major service. It's also been fully federalized - US bumpers, indicators, and I assume door beams (though I don't actually know). Cosmetically it's great - great paint, and the interior shows as new. Suffers from slow windows, but otherwise electrically solid. Features the deep front spoiler and a Tubi exhaust, and has all documents and tools. What would be a fair price?

No, I'm just looking for around what I paid. Hopefully the bubble won't inflate too quickly between the moment I sell it and the moment I buy the next one, but I expect it probably will.

 

I've read the US cars do better, but maybe that's a myth? In any regard, I'm really selling to do a color change, so I might as well buy a US car.

 

Euro cars in CA need to have a BAR sticker. No sticker, you are out of luck to get it registered. GL

Hard to say without pictures, but I don't think an asking price in the mid 60's would be out of line.

The car would do better if you put the correct euro bumpers back on instead of the US bumpers, since that's one of the primary reasons people like the euro cars.

You should probably have the major done too (at a reputable shop) if you want top dollar.

Good point about the major - that will help for sure, though I might just price it with that in mind and let the new owner do it. Unfortunately, I don't have the Euro bumpers - its a thoroughly federalized car. I'll post pictures soon.

I'll take some this weekend and post them. I think I won't do the major (it would take too long, and I need to move this car so I have space for the new one when I find it), but maybe a PPI? That way potential buyers won't have to worry about doing that themselves. I'll price it with the fact that it does need a major in mind. Quite honestly, I'm just assuming it needs a major - I never did a PPI on the car when I bought it, so I have no idea how the belts and hoses are.

If anyone has a lead on a grigio titanio / rosso '85 US 308 GTS, I'd greatly appreciate. I saw one listed in the classifieds, but it's sold I have a feeling I might be looking for a while.

 

selling and buying prices are always very funny. Last week i was offered a 1990 Testarossa with 14000 km and just one owner. Asking was 100 (!!) K Euro: he was a professional seller so i told him: "Thank you very much, but that price is very high: maybe you want to buy for the same price my 1990 single owner 348 tb, red tan like that Testarossa but with just 2400 km, one sixth than the Testarossa mileage". I never heard him anymore...

So, that QV, if is very good looking, serviced and OEM, maybe it can have an asking price of 60 K euro, but if you want to sell it to a professional trader maybe you will be will offered 40 k Euro. 5 k less if it needs a major service

Seems to me if it were really ready to go- major, belts/water pump/bearings, hoses, and so on & on, no other deferred maintenance items (turn signal stalk/tachometer/fuse panel, etc. issues, all expensive to fix, decent tires, for a 22k car 65-70K might be a good starting point. Of course it does need maintenance & repair, not to mention the gearbox, so you might call up a couple of reputable shops around the country & get a rough estimate for what it might need, then reduce the asking price accordingly. Low mileage doesn't necessarily mean low maintenance costs, especially for a nearly 30 year old car.

As prices are on the rise, you might also consider waiting until you find the car you want, and when you have it then sell the car you already have, on the basis it might be worth more as time goes on. It would be regrettable to sell what you have for (for example) 55K or so only to find that by the time you find the titanium grey & red car you want the price is now up to over 100K, or who knows how much.

Here in Monterey, California a typical major service (but nothing extra) typically costs around 7K or so. Some shops might quote a bit less but there's always something extra you didn't expect... but should. Also, you can get a pretty complete redo of an interior for 4-5K, including seats. One question: why not consider a 328 GTS, as well??? Double your prospects.

Sure, if you have the time and don't care whether it sells or not, ask anything you want but if you want the car to move IN THE USA, I'd bet 40 would be pushing it. The mileage is good but the federalization is questionable - how well was it done - and needing a service is, of course, an issue.

Also, IMO, having a PPI done is a waste of YOUR money as far as a selling point. I can't imagine a buyer would accept a PPI that was paid for/provided by the seller because it would create the question of how "objective" the PPI was.

 

Thanks Rich! I'm going to get it inspected within the next two weeks, and discount the price accordingly. I just don't think I'll get more than what I put into it, so I'd rather let the next owner do the maintenance. Besides, I might get lucky and find out it doesn't need a major, though I would guess it does. I agree about the appreciation issue - I am worried that prices will rise while I'm on the hunt, and that the difference between what I sell it for and what the next one costs will be significant. I may hold onto it through the winter, as it's a poor time to sell a targa car generally. Spring will give some indication whether the market has leveled out or not. In the meantime, I'll keep hunting for a US car. I really am kicking myself, as the car I wanted WAS available when I bought my current car, but then again, I was looking for a Euro car and didn't know that a move to Cali was in my future. Of course if there's an Fcahtter out there with an grigio / rosso '85 US car that wants to trade, that would be great too

I think you are setting a very unrealistic expectation for yourself re the price but I'll be happy to find out I'm mistaken...it will mean my 328 is worth a lot more than I think it is!

 

I would have the major done before the sale to give the new buyer confidence the car has been maintained properly. With the prices appreciating the way they are buyers are likely going to be more selective. Price range I would put the car in the 48-58k asking price depending on condition.

Although, that car did sit for 2 months in the summer before selling. As long as you aren't in a hurry that seems like a decent target.

 

I didn't see that it sold - from what I can see it got no bids on the July listing and was relisted twice (Aug/Sep) and got no bids on the subsequent attempts. Are you saying that it sold for the 55.9 at some point in September "off auction?" The Sep listing does not show that it sold.
