I was thinking about this today.

Everyone thinks of Italian car makes as being some of the best looking, sexiest cars in the world.

Over their entire history, which Italian car maker has made the best looking cars overall? Everyone has their flops and successes. But who has had the most simply beautiful machines to leave their factories over the years?

I have my opinion but I'll hold my fire. :)

Obsolete and defunct brands can be nominated

I will be bold and say Ferrari.

From the late '50s to the mid-'70s, too many to list, but the 250 GT SWB, 250 GT California SWB, 250 GTO, 400 Superamerica and others lock it up, IMHO. Ferrari also navigated the awkward '70s/'80s era better than anyone, with the 246, 365 GTB/4 and 308 GTS/GTB. They could have made only Trabants after that and it probably wouldn't change my vote.

    Honorable mention to Alfa.

I would say Pagani, if you are talking about EVERY car made by an Italian manufacturer.

The various Zonda models and the Huayra are beautiful both inside and out.

So, IMHO, they are batting 100% so far.

As far as who has had the largest number of beautiful car models, I would say Ferrari.

The '60's were a high point in automotive design and enthusiasm and Pininfarina was on fire during the '60's. The best of the best. And since Ferrari at that time was (almost?) exclusively Pininfarina designs then Ferrari gets the nod. But other manufacturers used them also and those cars are also excellent.

For me it's Ferrari. They came out with so many nice cars over the years. Other Italian makers have come with very nice car that could be THE nicest but only one or two in their history. Ferrari made so many they are unrivaled.

Bob are you still enjoying your vette? Are you thinking about another Ferrrari?

I don't think Enzo was that handsome, and I don't know what the rest look like.

...they have made just so many real beauties I especially like the 275 GTB short nose)over the years. BTW - that is why the old ones are so valuable - because they are just so beautiful.

That said, two of the very best designs ever were not Ferraris - the DeTomaso Mangusta and the Lamborghini Miura. Other greats of note - Iso Grifo (the one with the extended nose), Alfa Sprint Speciale, Maserati Ghibli, etc.

I also have to mention McLaren. The F1 was a tour de force and the recently discontinued one (MP 12 C?) was also quite nice.

For me its easily Lamborghini. You have a lot of great historical designs, 350/400 GT, Miura, Countach, and Diablo that still stand out anywhere. The Aventador is a very good modern design. Cars like the Jalpa and Espada have their charms. Even the bland designed Lamborghinis like Gallardo, Huracan, and Murcielago are highly thought of against their contemporaries.

Ferrari is hit and miss, with mostly misses over the past 30 years. Most of the other Italian manufacturers are not much more than coach builders rather than real automotive companies.

Bob, where the hell have you been?

If we're talking brands, and not design houses/designers, it's without a question Alfa Romeo.

As much as I like Ferrari, I'm gonna have to tip my hat to Lamborghini. In particular the Diablo and the Aventador.

I think the Muira is one of the most beautiful cars, EVER.

However the Bertoné V12 Mid engine concept car (think Dino) was similarly gorgeous.

They probably also have more flops than anyone but that's what happens when youre the oldest and have always been fighting with all the new comers to stay the best. Think NY yankees. They have the most WS wins and losses because they go there so often.
